    Question Difficulty selecting reverse gear?

    Hi Everyone.

I'm new here and have been lurking for the last few weeks.

I took delivery of a 2007 Toyota Hilux S/C 2.7 4x2 last week. I am loving it to bits but something is really bothering me.

I sometimes have difficulty getting it into reverse. Sometimes force helps but other times I have to select another gear or two before I can get it into reverse.

I have never had this problem before with any other vehicle and was wondering if this is normal or not.

I hope someone here can shed some light on this for me.

Sounds like your clutch is not releasing properly.

You can also try selecting any other gear before you try and put it into reverse. All the gears have a syncro ring and reverse doesn't. So the idea is to stop the cluster, before you try and engaged reverse.

Sounds normal to me. well on petrol cruisers in general. what gearbox is in this model? same as old 3rz-fe? I would not worry though. On a few toyota's with strong gearboxes it wil do that.

My D4D occasionally doesn't select reverse either. With motor running I select neutral, let the clutch out, re-engage the clutch and re-select reverse. I have never thought anything to be wrong with this.

I have had this on every single toyota i've ever driven. it's not just on bakkies, but on the cars too (had this on all 3 my corrolas). I found that putting it in 1st, letting the clutch go just until it grips (or moves the vehicle) and then trying reverse again, smooths out this issue.

Must be a Toyota thing... none of us understand...

Seriously though my old man's 'luxes were all like this as was my corolla and wife's conquest.

Same here, have it on the 2.7, the Fortuner and the new Hilux.

Just put it in neutral, give it a small quick rev, depress the clutch and select reverse. I have also always understood that it was because the reverse gear does not have a synchro ring.

Thanks for the replies. I am glad to hear this is a "standard feature" and not a problem with my gearbox. Today I tried a different tactic and I must say it helped quite a bit. Only had a problem with it once.

I noticed this morning when getting into the Hilux that it wouldn't select reverse again so I started it before trying it again and this seemed to help. I kept doing it this way the whole day and didn't have the problem again.

You could have gear oil in that gearbox and that will make is sticky and notchy.

Modern gearboxes use multi grade oil lately. I like using a oil from Shell 20w60. I have used it for quite a while and I must admit that the results are very satisfactory.
