RedlineR,
Thanks.
It is a good source but unfortunately it covers mostly the petrol Jeeps and not the WG 2.7 diesel as we know it.
The 2.7 diesel was not available as standard in the US and yet all the Sprinters and Freightliners used almost the same engine.
Aw damn Marsian
Guess you'll have to trade the 2.7 on a v8![]()

Goeiedag

Marsian, you seem to be a total expert here. Thanks for the Diesel-bleeding input. I plan to keep my WJ 2.7 forever (or until 500 000km) - whichever comes first
Three questions I'd like answered somehow..
- Is Quadra drive a reliable 4wheel drive system? ie, does it work well, and does it break? If so, how? (is electronics used in its functioning or is it purely hydraulic/mechanical)
- How serious is tyre-size difference? front vs rear, and spare-wheel size (making a potential three different sizes on vehicle after puncture!) I've heard of someone who had a flat, changed to the spare then after driving 100km approx to the nearest tyre repair place (on N1) blew his gearbox. Bad luck, or bad design?
- Anyway to pushstart these babies?
Thanks, Jj
Jj,
First of all I am no expert and have only taken a keen interest in my vehicle. (I consider myself blessed if I learn only one new item each day.)
The following are my own opinions relating to your question.
Quadradrive I
It is a great concept but does not work as well as advertised i.e. all the power transferred to one wheel, will never be. At the time of presenting it to the market it was one of the best(most ingenious) traction control systems available.
The system is really a very fancy LSD (with no electronics) in each axle as well as between front and rear in the NV247 transfer case. You can read a lot more at www.wjjeeps.com about the system.
The most important aspect is the correct quantity of friction modifier which must be used. The dealers tend to steer on the safe side and put too much friction modifier in which will render the system as a normal open diff.
I haven't heard of any catastrophic failures yet.
Tyre size difference
Like on any vehicle the correct and same tyre size should be used on all four wheels. I your spare has more tread on it and you put it on with three of the same wheels with less tread on it should not be a serious problem. I prefer to do a five wheel rotation procedure every 5000km's.
Replacement of a spare should not blow your gearbox - the transfer case will go first and even this is unlikely. So I think it is bad luck!

No-No.![]()
Ive been keeping a keen eye on this thread for a long time as I have been looking around for a used 2.7WJ to fit my budget.
Some backround info first :
I bought a used 97 Disco Tdi and drove it for more than 5 years without any major hickup and my wife and I both loved that Landy. However she (the landy not the wife) was leaking oil and I often need to go and see clients at their homes and it was rather embarrasing plus I was not so confident in her anymore. So about a year ago I decided to sell the landy and buy the Pajero (3LV6 SWB) Im currently driving. I regret selling the landy and should have kept her and bought a plat kar.
The Pajero Im driving is an amazing vehicle. It is as solid and reliable as you can get and I could drive to Cairo now - NO PROBLEM and Im only the second owner and she only has 71000ks on the clock. But the Pajero is SO heavy on juice and being a SWB it has lots of limitations in the packing dept even just for two of us.
So after reading all the info on the net including this site Ive finally made up my mind that I want to trade the Pajero in on a 2.7 WJ with a budget of around R 120k.
Some of the reasons are :
1) For my budget the 2.7 represents great (in fact the best) value for money in comparison to Mitsus, Toys, Vws and even Landys - Ive checked them all.
2) My needs - which are for a reliable overlander that will be used for commuting (while im paying it off) and our holidays including towing a boat to the dam once a month etc. Once Ive paid it off Id like to keep the jeep (forever) and buy another car for commuting.
3) When I plan our holiday I don't want to blow more than 70% of the budget on petrol plus I need some range on the Std tank - thus the oil burner.
4) Our family may grow in the future and so the need for a 4 door with packing space.
5) It seems that the 2.7 merc motor and gearbox is reliable, delivering excellent power.
6) The Quadra drive system is really competent
7) I need something reliable that I can keep for a loooonnnnnng time.
So now that ive convinced myself that I don't need to buy a box of pineapples (or do I) ive found 2 jeeps im interested in (remember I need to trade the Pajero) :
1) 2003 Laredo with 126k on the clock for R 119000.00
Full service history
One owner
Excellent condition
Dealer will through in a two year unlimited milage warantee
No extras just a tow bar
2) 2004 Laredo with 117k on the clock for R 119000.00
Not sure about service history or how many owners
I suspect is was a repo vehicle
Waiting for dealer to confirm details and what they will through into the deal for me.
So after reading all of the above i want to know :
1) Am i bluffing myself and should I rather go to Fruit & Veg for a pineapple ?
2) Which one of the two jeeps would you take ?
3) Is R 119 000 a good price ?
Thanks for reading all of that, I look forward to your replies.

Chris,
We do not want to change the reason for this thread to much, but...
If these are your only choices I'd look at the one with the unlimited 2 year warranty. At that mileage the injectors might need replacement.
Ask the dealer for the service history - don't let them tell you that it is not available - they keep all the invoicing details.
Find out when the gearbox oil was changed. If it wasn't done yet you must insist that they do it as part of the deal.
Also listen for front and rear diff noises when decelerating as this may point to a routine front pinion bearing replacement.
Find out if it is a factory fitted tow package and what the diff ratio is. The diff ratio ie. 3.73 or 3.55 will be stamped on a vertical plate which is held in position by the rear diff cover fasteners.
The Laredo doesn't have all the luxuries of a Limited or Overland but this does mean there is less to go wrong, especially climate control blend door flaps.
Good luck with your decision.
I agree with Marsian, I have the overland but imho the Laredo is the better buy. Two year unlimited will give you a good feel for the vehicle! Strongs!
Hi there
Thank you for the replies.
Cheers
Chris
Hi Marsian,
I've just found this thread and am very impressed with your knowledge on the 2.7. My wife drives one and we are experiencing a problem with it and I was hoping you could help.
When driving on the hiway at 110kph+ and about 2300rpm there is a slight "hunting" with the revs, it also battles to acelerate(at these revs) if you do so lightly. If you "foot it" it kicks down and acelerates to full revs no problem.
I noticed it while driving that there seemed to be no power, then when i lookied at the rev counter i saw the slight bouncing/hunting.
I checked for error codes and got P1130. I changed all 3 fuel lines ie. from filter to rail. But no difference. The vehicle doesn't battle to start but at the same time it turns over once or twice before firing. It does not smoke noticably, only very slightly at cold start.
It has done about 220k and i have been servicing it myself since about 180k.
I would be stoked if you could give me a bit of advice.
Thanks a mil

Nick47,
Sorry for the delayed reply. I am not exactly sure because there may be several possible causes. I will look into it and post any info I can find or think of. In the mean time I have attached the Chrysler service procedure for P1130.
I received delivery of my 03 JGC Laredo 2.7 on Friday - Im over the moon (see my other thread in this regard).
Just a quick question which im sure seems stupid but coming from a landy id rather be safe than sorry.
What is the normal position on the temp gauge when driving the 2.7![]()
We took the Jeep to Parys yesterday and I noticed that it varies between 60 and 80 going up and down hill etc, it was a nice day so not too hot outside.
If the temp goes over 100 should I be worried, when should I start worrying ?
Thanks
Chris
Hello all.
I have a 2002 laredo 2.7cdi. I bought it for my wife and she absolutely loves it. She has had no problems with it except it smokes, often quite a lot. The injectors are apparently within spec, she starts every time, although sometimes cranks for a little bit. Is there a safe additive, designed for the bosch crd system, one could use to clean the injectors? Whenever i drive it, under loaded acceleration (top gear and overtaking), it cuts out, brings on management light. I have to stop, select neutral, start vehicle before i can continue driving. I've had it diagnosed as fuel pressure problems, and most likely the regulator on the rail, caused by not using 50ppm diesel. Aside from that, when i accellerate hard from stationary, the rear seems to wobble a bit. Is this normal with the quadradrive? I've had 4X4s for years, from landys to cars, and never felt this before. there are no knocking noises, and nothing seems worn or loose underneath. I've spoken to a friend of mine who had a similar problem of the wobble, since his jeep was brand new. He eventually changed his tyres and that seemed to cure it.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
