    Default Transfer box oil

    Hi All

Not sure if my transfer box needs oil or not asked a mach to check the level,he checked the level in the gear box and says the transfer box fills from the gear box and the gearbox was full.

Is this true? If not where can i find the place to fill oil or how do i check and what would be the best oil.

Forgot to mention it is a manual 300tdi with high milieage.

    Kind regards

AFAIK if the oil from your gearbox flows to the transfer case then you have an leaking oil seal.

How to check? Undo the top inlet opening, to the left hand side of the tc (That is sitting in the cab looking foward left) Top up until the oil is level with the hole. That is how I do it, usually end up in a mess. Anybody know of a better way?

O yes. The mechanic does not know what he talks about

I have a Disco 2 and the gearbox and the transfer case do not use the same oil. I assume that the same would apply to the Disco 1

Depending on when last the fluid was changed, while you are going through the trouble of checking the level, you might as well change the oil. Never a bad thing. It is quite a job to get the filler plug out as it is a tight fit between the handbrake cable and the plug. Use a 1/2 inch ratchet, it works nice. First make sure that you can get the filler plug out before draining the oil you might be stuck with an empty transfer case.

Some kind of pump to get the oil in is also a great help.

according to the RAVE manual, the auto and manual boxes both run on Dextron IID ATF oil, the transfer case as well as both diffs on EP90.
just remember if you have an auto, you need to check the level cold while idling and in drive. for the transfer case ensure the vehicle is on level ground or on a 4 poster lift, the oil must be level with the top filler hole ie fill till it runs out then replace the plug.
if you have just bought the vehicle, rather drain all the oil and replace completely. it's worth the expense. do the diffs at the same time. just remember that on the front diff, there are reservoirs located just inside the "big round balls" on the diff housing. the filler is on top and needs to be filled seperately. the CV's on some of the models run on grease and then you should not put in oil!

I bought myself a smallish pump up poison pump from the local hardware shop (the type you use to spray insecticide on plants). with the nozzle removed, you have fairly easy access to the plugs and makes refilling the boxes quite easy and less messy. this job is easy for DIY and anyone is capable of doing.

I love thread tape. i apply before refitting the plugs and it makes loosening again a whole lot easier.
