Bakkie dust sealing

Good day all,

I am looking to add some dust proofing in the bed of my bakkie. I have tried the rubber lining stick-on versions, but havent had great success. I am now looking to try a full bin liner mat as in this picture. Have you tried this? What was/is your experience? Would you recommend it?

I had one in my P-series, and it was great.

It properly seals the bin, I still had some dust ingress, but it was due to gaps on my canopy door. as the P-series has a weird shape and sealing on the canopy door to tailgate is a mission. Also helps a lot with stuff rolling/ moving around in the bin. easy to clean. Just hose it off with a HP washer.

I removed mine from the P-series and want to flog it, don't know what bakkie you have? It doesn't fit in my Ranger.

Only thing is to take care when opening the tailgate. It has some bolts you need to replace with round head Allen key bolts to clear the rubbers, so when you want to open the tailgate, you kind of need to press/support the tailgate in before pulling the handle to open. Someone not aware of this may potentially break your tailgate handle if they try open without pushing/supporting the tailgate.

This is due to the seal it forms.

I would recommend it for sure.

I sealed my tailgate with open cell foam stuck down with double sided tape. Got it to be almost 100%.

Redo it in some places, but works very well. Last trip in gravel, was no dust in the canopy.

Cost was about R100.

I bought a piece of layflat irrigation irrigation hose and riveted it with aluminium strips on each side of the tailgate opening.

About R20/m and never had any issue there.

Thanks for the info! I have a 2018 V6 Amarok. If I understand correctly, these mats are designed for the specific vehicle shape and size, so unfortunately it won't fit on mine either. Are you going to get one for the Ranger?

I installed a Tonneau King in the Amarok when I bought it. Have never had any dust issues with that together the WILD canopy.

Have you closed up the holes under the top lip of the bin. They usually go down all the way into the wheel arches. That is where most of the dust comes from.
Just pump some expansion foam into the holes

I have a Tonneau King tri-fold on the Ranger. More dust inside the bed than outside. The I saw this holes you mentioned in the front corners. Got some expansion foam and filled them. Then noticed there are a few down the side to, filled all up. Result, just as much dust as before but from the quantity and direction most, if now all comes from the bottom of the tailgate.

I tried sealing the bakkie as discussed above, but was never 100% successful. I believe its due to the fact that the aerodynamics create a vacuum inside the bakkie, that then sucks dust through the smallest hole.

Since my canopy was fitted I've had no dust ingress when leaving the sliding window open (and I have no sealing around the tailgate now). I believe that's due to pressurising the bakkie with clean air, therefore clean air blow's out of the various gaps rather than sucking dirty air in.

Can one not fit / create a similar solution for a bakkie with a tourneau cover? Perhaps fitting a opening / flap on the bakkie wall between the cab and the bakkie?

There's a great solution available:

Buy an SUV.

Completely dust proof for all intents and purposes.

Unless of course you really need a bakkie.

I had a double cab, and then I asked myself that question.

For many of the reasons that I thought I needed one, I came to the conclusion that there are ways and means around each one.

A trailer, a rental trailer, a roof box, a rental roof box, and of course your neighbors bakkie.
Yes, I know your neighbor has one, because South Africans are so bakkie bedonnered!

SUV's compared to bakkies, just rock.
The comfort, the speed, ease of use, the practicality of things not being tossed about at the back, the dust proofing, the superior handling. But for me the biggest is the better rear suspension. A bakkie is always going to be compromised as it's a load carrying work horse with leaf springs that ride harder, is skittish over bumps, and is plain dangerous in the rain when empty.

So ask yourself again. Do you really reeeeeeally need a bakkie....
