Wrong way to do this. Rather go to a boat/paddling shop and get one that fits properly, is comfortable and does not interfere with rowing.

Also if you are ocean going get a waterproof bag for your phone and get this app:

Just a warning you need to make sure that you have compliant floatation devices as per SAMSA. Paddling on any open water in SA including offshore requires compliant floatation devices. This was a huge issue back 2019 when this enforced you could not do any officially sanctioned canoe races unless you had compliant life jacket with the appropriate label ( see the attached document) it was quite frustrating to fork out R2k to buy exactly the same life jacket only with a stupid label attached so that you could do the Dusi.

    Disagree
The OP does not want to do the Dusi I should think. Your link refers to lifejacket standards for small powered vessels. I could not find any regulations that state it is compulsory to carry a life jacket on a kajak.

Nope, even if I want to just paddle on Hartebeespoort dam you need to comply, the regulations say this -

National Small Vessel Safety Regulations of 2007
National Small Vessel Safety Regulations of 2007 comprises basic safety regulations and rules for small vessels in South Africa. This includes both inland and on-sea vessels. These regulations fall under The Merchant Shipping Act 57 of 1951 which controls and expands the Republic’s maritime interest within the South African maritime borders.

These regulations apply to commercial (licensed) vessels and recreational vessels. This includes inland water vessels of all types and on-sea vessels of the length of 24 meters or less and licensed vessels of the length of 14 meters or less. Furthermore, this applies to small vessels such as personal watercraft (jet skis).

In terms of the act SAMSA have jurisdiction over inland waterways which is why I quoted their requirements -

"The Regulations extends SAMSA's Core mandate to include inland waterways (only waterways accessible to the public) within the Republic. That is to ensure boating safety on our waters."

Our canoeing federation argued your point that it doesn't apply to kayaks and we lost the argument, believe me the canoeing fraternity were up in arms because we suddenly had to toss out perfectly good PFDs and replace them with exactly the same kit but with the SANS label on it.

    Mandate

They occasionally check and enforce the life jacket requirements on the Vaal Dam, even for paddleskis and canoes / kayaks.

Ask me how I know. 🫤

He's correct. Certainly in Durban the rules are strictly applied, you'll be escorted to the beach or the banks of the Umgeni, issued with a fine.

I think the dispute here is between an approved PFD and a floating dingus from Toys-R-Us. The fine will easily be the difference in cost between the two. Not wearing one at all could cost you your life.

Empty ones. Otherwise you will drown but at least leave a clear search spot.

    Check this link out.

Gives you all the safety gear that is required for kayaks.

Quite a long list but worth while as things can go south quickly out there.

I was thinking to get one of these shark banz thingies.
