These are the only areas in Botswana that we somehow omitted during previous travels.
I am especially interested in the mystical Kubu Island area.
However, exact dates are impossible to forecast and we may also decide to return via Namibia.
Therefore I am very hesitant to book.
The time frame will be around mid July.
We are 1 vehicle with a RTT
My questions :
- How available are campsites in those reserves during July??
- Any recommendations for walk ins / short notice bookings ??
- Will the area be dry enough by then to facilitate travel ??
Many thanks
I've been to Kubu twice and never had an issue. Once in May and once in late June. I expect you'll be fine. When you get close and know your dates contact them via their webpage/facebook page a few days ahead and you can secure a spot. You can also probably just drive up, but it's nice to know when arriving from a long drive that you don't have to worry about it.
Should be plenty dry in July.
Nxai Pan South camp will almost always have availability. Same strategy - contact them a couple of days ahead and you'll be good to go. Or drive up and you'll probably be fine, and if not you can divert to Makgadikgadi. MPNP almost always has availability at Khumaga. Also almost always at Njuca and Tree Island, but those campsites are not for everyone. And there are only a few, so during the holidays they may be full. We've never had to make more than minor adjustments to our plans when contacting the campsite a few days ahead, barring the CKGR and Moremi/Chobe.
