YES Main road to Mababe, Khwai is very much used, even though there is water, there is traffic from Khwai Trust vehicles and Lodge vehicles driving through. Savuti, I guess the sandridge road will be the better choice, BUT always ask at Entrance

If it doesn't rain heavily in March then CKGR will dry out a lot quicker than Moremi. Some of the pools in Moremi can last for weeks

Hi, we'll be in CKGR from march 9th and in moremi from march 19th. It is probably not realistic for the parks to be open then or? Does anyone know how the situation is at khwai? We have a booking at magotho. Thanks Isa

Just saw a video shot today, one tour operator trying to drive main road from North Gate to Dombo pools. It’s all flooded. There is hardly any ground and it rained a lot today in Moremi. It will take very long time for Moremi, especially Xakanaxa, and Khwai area to be accessible . Many travel plans will have to change.

Hi and thank you to everyone for all the excellent tips, guidance and updates on the current situation. I feel for all the people and businesses affected by the flooding.

We all know there are few certainties with the weather, but if it does begin to change/dry up through March as you would normally expect, based on your experience do you have any rough estimate of when CKGR and then Moremi might be able to reopen?

Are we talking a couple of weeks OR over a month?

    Thanks Ian

I t depends, we are still having thunderstorms which does not help with drying up.
But in general, CKGR should be okay in a short while with detour options around muddy pools, once the gates are opening again.

Other is Moremi which can take a long time due to the black cotton soils prevalent in many forested areas. Forested also means shade under big trees which delay any drying process. I wouldn't count easy access to Moremi before April 2nd half.

And LONG tall Grass....And assuming, as expected this year, flooding arriving early in those flood plains.

    Hi,
just to some alternatives. When at Nxai South Camp, we had substantial rain yesterday morning und subsequently all tracks were flooded. It will be a while, until I would dare to go out on the pan there.
The track to the seven sisters is Ok and driveable.
Boteti is also Ok and as always with plenty of animals but the big herds of zebra etc. that are at the pans in the east but not recommended going there...

Thanks Pat and Wolf for your valued advice. We're booked in to Xakanaxa from the 5th tp 10th March. I've reached out to the operator and asked to postpone because of road conditions as reported here. Their reply today was that there is water, but the camp is accessible quote 'For now the roads have water but they are accessible, if any changes Wildlife office will send us a letter' not sure how I should take this. In the meantime while waiting for a rather delayed response I booked in to Magotho.. I'm leaning toward your good advice and think I should insist on the postponement.

Obviously they dont want to loose money by refund, because from April campsites availability is very limited. I think DWNP is under pressure from these operators, NOT to close, BUT this weekend Rainfall projections, is that there will be massive rainfall till monday. I dont see Moremi getting any better soon.

You will be using Mamuno border, to Ghanzi and Dkar. The border is open. No issues.
Just curious, are you going to Dkar for a funeral of the late Mr. Xgaiga, who passed last week. The famous Naro San who did bushman walks in Dkar at Kuru trust.

Thank you for all the very useful posts!!

we are due to go to khwai and xakanaka and then nxai from 19 April this year for 10 nights

It is so hard to call if it will be feasible or not to go in effectively just over a months time

With the Angola waters still to come I suspect this will see August holidays impacted too

we would dearly love to go in mid April will it be worth trying or not?

April is still very far, and your Mid April....Thats a long way to go. BUT like we said, Moremi takes time to dry and the water on the floodplain could still be there, and there could still be some areas around Xakanaxa, that will not be accessible.
Definitely YES, arrival of Angola flood mid June or earlier, MIGHT pose challenges, especially that our WOOD bridges are not up to task.
Scenario 1: First Bridge when flooded, the detour is very deep and supplies trucks worsen the terrain around it, and getting stuck is very possible.
Scenario 1: Second bridge is not in good shape, we always detour around it and THAT DETOUR is a channel and it will a challenge in August.
The third challenge for our Bridges is 4th Bridge. Always down and we use the detour on the left. And that detour is a channel from dead tree island. So, we in for a FUN season. I should think, getting prepared for every scenario should be every traveller task.
We gotten used to getting stuck and recovering ourselves , so we will be on the road, with gum boots, highlift Jack and many more of course.
