Steyr Puch Haflinger 4x4

Hey Guys,do any of you know these 4x4's,they are quite strong and has front difflock rear difflock and full difflock (4x4)
They have a 700cc 2 cylinder Boxer Motor.....They were used by the austrian army

I am looking at buying one of them as a hunting vehicle?How do they compare to a Polaris Ranger XP 4x4 Side by side?
was the polaris built off the same principle?

It's the vehicle with the lowest maximum indicated speed - there should be a little plaque on the far right of the dash - in 1st gear that I know of, ie the crawling ability is incredible, so if that would be useful to you it's something to consider. It doesn't have low range as such, but the gearing is so low anyway that you would probably only use 3rd to 5th on normal roads, and 1st to 3rd on difficult terrain. As you'll also see on the same plaque, maximum speed in general is low, somewhere in the region of 40-odd kmh. I'm pretty sure a Ranger would be faster, but you could confirm that with the agents. Finding parts for it is quite a bear, obviously.

Hehe,speed isnt a great factor we want to use it for hunting,and picking up the animals in rough terrain we bought a nice one from a oke in JHB,for R35,000,its still in good condition and compared to the price of the polaris @R135,000....it was a good buy.

Good grief, that one looks brand new! 8)

Because they have portal axles, their ground clearance is totally off the chart compared to anything else with the same 11" stock wheel size; something like 235 mm, iirc. It's better, in fact, than many modern-day bakkies' clearances, and with a track width of just more than 1 m, a wheel base of not much more than that and approach and departure angles to dream about, you'll appreciate why their slogan reads something like, "Going places other 4x4s can only dream about."

Dis 'n baie lekker inkopietrollie... 8) Parkeerplekke voel so groot, 'n mens het sommer lus om hom net daar op die plek om te draai net om te wys jy kan!

Dankie Vlakkie,sal nog fotos opsit as ons die jagraam,winch,bullbar en runnerbars opgesit het,hehe,ons wil n tipe foam in die wiele pomp,sal dit werk vir sekelbos dorings?....

ek dink as die wiele gevul is met die foam,gan daar baie min goed wees wat die puch gaan stop.....

Hey,het vandag die puch gaan haal en is baie tevrede,die dingetjie is awesome,ons het bietjie by die werk met hom gespeel,hy het sonder enige moeite oor die 4 pallets geklim,en sy spoed is ook nie te versmaaie nie

Hey mense,update op die puch,ons het vandag begin met die modifications op die hilux se jagraam vir die puch....
ons moet die trap sak en daar moet nog n pyp inkom,die raam werk heel goed uit,hy sit op dieselfde hoogte as wat n land cruser se raam sit....en die raam dien ook as n rollbar,sou dinge skeefloop....
die raam is 600mm te lank,so ons sal hom moet korter maak...

Ek het ook die puch se silencer afgehaal en n ander een opgesit
(Wat ons by gekry het) het die olie geruil,olie filter,airfilter en moet nog die belde bietjie stywer stel....

Gaan hom weer oor spray,weet iemand wat noem mens die kleur wat die land crusers in uitkom,daai khaki kleur....

Ja, di's jammer dat so 'n uniekie voertuig nou belas moet word met al die pyp rommel op hom want hy was in elk geval nie ontwerp vir so 'n loonvrag nie.

Die Puchs wat in die RSA is, kom van die dep. van Bosbou/Waterwese, die weermag en vanuit Bechuanaland Protecturate, nou Botswana, waar hulle ook in hul destydse weermag diens gedoen het. Myne het van laasgenoemde gekom en was 'n komunnikasie voertuig gewees. Ek het hom later aan 'n wynboer in die Kaap verkoop.

Hier is 'n oulike truuk:
Vat 'n 210 l drom en spyker hom stewig op die grond vas en die Puch, met al sy grendels gesluit, sal net so oor hom klim. (behalwe as jy olie op die drom smeer!!)

My late Dad immigrated from Austria in the late 1940's after WW2. and he used to speak of these little things. We actually looked for one for use on our small holding, but that was on the '70's and they were not easily available here. I've since seen a few of them in action .... damn nifty!

Apparently they were also pretty popular for use in the sugar plantations in KZN. Still a couple of them chugging around there, I believe.

Wel,dit is waarvoor ons hom wil gebruik,om bokke te gaan haal waar ander 4x4's sukkel,die raam en als kan afgehaal word,geen skade word aan die bakwerk gedoen nie.....en het buitendien nie meer die oorspronklikke bak op nie.....verder word niks aan hom verander nie,tenminste gan hy nou gebruik word,en nie in iemand se motorhuis staan en oproes nie....

My pa het destyds 2 gekoop by die weermag wat hulle getoets het. Die kleintjie en 'n groter een. Die weermag kon hulle nie breek nie so hulle is tough. Die grote was ongelooflik sterk. Jy kon sy 4 wiel en diff lock met levers in die kajuit aansit en dit was 25 jaar terug. Hulle kom ook met 6 wiele uit. Hy het dit detyds aan 'n boer naby Wellington verkoop en ek dink hy staan nog daar. Ek kan sy nommer probeer kry as iemand sou belangstel.
