Chuck the stretchers, gazebo & pop-up kitchen etc IMO
    Dont use big expansive Tents

Just use HD foam mattresses ( not air ….)
an awning off your roof-rack (not 270)
and a gullwing /cupboard as Kitchen etc
Use Domes or Oztents or Coleman tents etc

… if you have a wife and 2 older teenagers
    you should have 4 capable set-up & pack-up workers … more than most …

P.S. A Gullwing Cupboard should be utilitarian & not a display cabinet.

I had the same issue. the car and roof rack was fully loaded with kids and camping gear. At some points I felt very unsafe with the load on the roof and in the car and that I am putting the family at risk if something ugly happens.

What I did was, I rented a camping trailer with TTT for a long weekend, it had everything in it that was needed for basic easy camping. We just took the needed goods we tested it over the weekend and found it to be so much better than pitching up a dome tent with the extention and awning on the car. My wife and I always ended up irritated and lost the mood of camping... until the camp is set with the fire going and the sun set

I was able to setup the Echo MK1 TTT easily by myself, while the wife looked after the kids and sorted them out. Happy wify, happy Kids and happy paps

The next week I found a nice 4x4 camping trailer with everything from WBC for R30K. Best money I have spend in a long time.

The other nice thing is, the camping trailer is now "hak en gaan" as everything is there and has its spot. No need to rush packing and look for space for something or forgetting something at home.

Seeing you have a bakkie and box trailer, can't you maybe get someone to modify the trailer to add a TTT on to it? The nice thing with the bakkie is you have lekker space to add a spare dome tent for the kids if needed and other camping things.

Ons het vir so 5 jaar ge-tentkamp.

Tandeborsel, roll-on en shampoo bly sommer in karavaan.

Wanneer ons off the grid gaan, neem ek ekstra solar panele saam.

I'd look at a trailer setup if I were you, not a small caravan, since it will most probably be a older road caravan and they don't do gravel roads very well.

I've always loved the idea of a blank canvis, you can start very basic with a Jurgens XT or Metalian as mentioned, then over time build it to exactly what you want as the budget and needs are there.

I have a friend who bought his XT140 years ago and for a couple of months he didn't even have a TTT on it, he still camped with his ground tent till he properly decided what exactly he wanted.

Not the question you asked, or the answer you seeked - but if was your age, I would just upgrade my license. You still have many years of camping ahead of you, and the variables influencing that, are in constant flux, so do it, rather earlier than later.

The wife and I used a Wildebeest Kalfie for about 3 years, after tent camping. It worked great, and a lot less hassle than the tent setup. Then came along out first born, and I sold the Kalfie for a Sprite Scout. Only realised the Scout is illegal to tow with a B license after our 3rd trip....never checked properly. I had the weight in my mind as 950kg's and not 750....

The Scout is nice and light, easy to set up etc, and a lot more comfortable with the little one around, she us now almost 2 years old, than what the trailer setup was.

I have upgraded my B to EB about a month ago, as mentioned the Scout is illegal to tow on B. So now I might just as well sell the Scout and buy a bigger caravan ! It is a mission, but just so much more worth it.

Road caravans do not do well on gravel, even the Scout I have had to repair a door that came off on a fairly good gravel road !

Seeing we are the same age, I would strongly suggest doing your EB. I did mine 3 years ago and never looked back. In terms of trailer/caravan options it opens up a whole new world.

    Edit:

Ek het my standaard 6voet Karet waentjie met 'n toe 'nose cone' omskep in my kampwaentjie.

My problem is packing and pitching camp is a huge job especially if we only camp 1 or 2 nights.

I would like some ideas on how to simplify this to make it easier, problem is I have a code B license so a big caravan is out of the quesion.

So will a trailer towable with a code B license a TTT and A kitchen make life easier for me? Will there be enough space for 5 camping chairs and a second tent.

    Please assist with some ideas.

Edit: maybe I should ad. Pleant of packing space because we use the double cab, So much more practical than a SUV

I like the idea of a small caravan however I am not so sure how well they will do on bad dirtroads and in the rough.
I used to have the same set-up! I tour into African countries 3-4 times a year. We use karma quip and Oztents with a 270 big country awning. I bought a Drifta oztent bag to speed up packing up time. My storage system is set-up for touring. Takes me around 10 mins to set-up alone for Solo trips or with friends the same time for two tents. Roof rack is essential. Keep everything organised, tent pegs etc in a box all together.

    Thanks for all the inputs.
So we bought a Jurgens XT 120.
We were considering something smaller but this one came around for R40k with a Swomaster fridge, Howling moon tent with ad a room and roofrack with table slides so we could not let the oppurtunity pass.
Will have to het the EB license sorted now.
