    Default Accident at Cape Cross

Accident yesterday afternoon between a Hilux and a FJ towing a bushlapa. I pray all involved will make a full recovery.

This looks like a case of the Hilux being on the wrong side of the road.

Horrific! Hope no serious injuries. The FJ is very strong, not sure about the Hilux.

    Hope everyone is ok.

Looks like it happened on a fairly open straight flat stretch of that road.

That road always makes me a bit edgy, no road markings, it's narrow, with blind corners and rises, large trucks, slippery when wet, wind gusts, low visibility in mist and plenty of speeding drivers.

Folks seem to drive it and treat it like they would a tar road, rather than the salt road which it is.

We drove it again now in September and I again mentioned to my wife how much I dislike driving on that road, could not wait to get off it.

I drive very cautiously when on it, I always slow down and pull towards the left shoulder when a vehicle approaches from the front.
I also slow right down when approaching the blind rises and blind corners.

I stand corrected, not a Ranger but a hilux. Those roads are treacherous.

Both vehicles seem to have both front doors open, which usually means the passenger compartment remained intact, usually a good sign (provided all occupants were buckeled up and sitting properly). I am not sure if the photos are somehow mirrored, but the impact seems to be on the left front of each vehicle? Possiby one of the vehicle being on the wrong side of the road?

I suspect the tourist was used to driving on the RHS of road. I work in Canada and even though i have plenty of RHS driving experience (5 years) , my inclination is still to keep left on gravel roads. If you're tired or distracted you seem to revert to the mental picture one's mind expects to see.

I agree Andrew. Driving on one side of the road is hard wired with most people, even if they are in a vehicle that is configured for the other side of the road. Often they are in the centre, if not the wrong side of the road.

I hope all make a speedy recovery.

I agree. I'm pretty good at driving on other side when abroad. I do recall however being on a small country road in France, took a wrong turn so turned around, did it automatically while thinking of where the correct route was and a minute later this idiot comes towards me on the left side of the road, then I remembered where I was. All with enough time to go back to the right. Might have been a different story if it was a fast road and we were on a bend.

I also suspect tourist used to driving on the other side of the road. Several years back we were in Kgalagadi, not far from Twee Rivieren when a combi came around the bend on the wrong side of the road. Luckily we were all travelling at low speed so he was able to swerve out. I can recall how all the passengers turned their heads around to look at us with eyes wide as they drove by.

I drove the C14 on Saturday, work trip, about 60km out of Walvis and back.

Was driving a Land Cruiser donkey so averaging around 80kph. The road is a very good salt road at the moment, but it has quite a few nasty blind rises.. The thing that struck me was the amount of tourist vehicles that were driving over the middle of these rises. Must have been 1 out of every 3 vehicles. Accidents waiting to happen, in my opinion.

Seen it many times before, but it seems to be more of a trend these days.

That is so idiotic! Why why why? I see a lot of drivers in SA as well, putting their right front wheel right on the middle line, like it was painted there to keep aim. If you have two vehicles travelling towards each other (200-240km/h), you would want as much as possible space between them!

Also, for traffic behind such a vehicle it is almost impossible to see ahead without moving into the oncoming traffic lane! Moron's!!!

You see this often on gravel roads as well, it becomes a habit. Also on roads with cambers as you don't have to hang on the steering. What is the salt roads like nowadays? They used to be quite cambered.

If the speed limit on our salt roads of 80 kmh was
adhered to from both sides also with lights on,
this could have been avoided but??

That FJ actually looks a lot worse than the Hilux.

Hint: the RH door bent on opening showing that whole chassis is bent.

Im wondering if the trailer had anything to do with it or if a 11+ year old vehicles technology is that far behind the newer hilux.

Good point, I recon the trailer had it's share on mass at the moment of impact, but we can't see the rear damage on the FJ.

I suspect the FJ with its "suicide doors" is at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to structural integrity...
