Scorpion Sting Season Is Here

We once met a guy who had been stung by Parabuthus transvaalicus, several years before in the Kruger Park, at night, around the braai, wearing only sandals. They tried to treat the pain locally, but once it became unbearable and other shock-related symptoms became apparent, they decided to go to the hospital. His wife told us that she had to drive over 60km in the dark, dodging elephants, to get him to the hospital at Phalaborwa. He was more or less unconscious by the time they got to the hospital and he required life support and intensive care for a couple of days. Full recovery subsequently.

That sounds like Neil Carlson, his wife is Pam. I was interviewed for an insert for 50/50 about Neils sting. Neil was at his house at Ingwelala. Late one evening he was putting out the paraffin lamps. A Parabuthus transvaalicus was eating the insects that had fallen on the ground after being attracted to the light. Neil stepped on the scorpion (Neil was not wearing shoes - Ouch!).

At the hospital he did not receive antivenom. He endured a long recovery period for weeks afterwards.

It's a typical story. The initial symptoms (localised pain following by systemic symptoms) where enough to prompt them to go to a hospital. They did drive into a heard of elephants on the way to Phalaborwa. The lessons there were that antivenom would have made a huge difference in the recovery period.

The good news is that, we have funding to produce National Scorpion Sting Management Guidelines (we will also do a spider version). These guidelines are important because they go to all hospitals and are used in training medical professionals. The guidelines include the use and importance of antivenom.

Far North Western Namibia.
Found him in the morning when packing up camp.

Judging by the big tail, small pinchers theory, he looks like he could have caused at bit of a problem if stung so far from help.
