I know and agree that the AMC head is 1st, 2nd,3rd and 4th prize. But I helped a friend rebuild his TD5 a while back and he used a head from Components for Africa ( Heads for Africa ). That engine is still running with more than 80 000km completed. My old D1 300tdi was also rebuilt with one of their heads and that has done more than 200 000km on the rebuilt engine.

I recently enquired about another head and they went out of their way to help me locate a head at one of their dealers.

There is apparently another brand that sells for R15k. It's a new brand, untested.

I found a complete motor with 200k km on it fir R35k, on exchange, but one is never sure what one is actually getting.

I would not get another motor on exchange at that price what happens if wanted to swop parts over if so called exchange engine parts were not as good as your old parts

There's diesel in the oil, so it's either injector rings or washers or the head that's cracked. Previous owner replaced the head gasket a few months ago, so I'm leaning toward head cracked. I'll first get the rings and washers replaced and then retest. Hopefully that will solve the issue, if not, new head.

Trouble is I'm overseas for the next 3 months and there's nobody to take the defender to the mechanic...Will have to wait till next year to resolve.

Get original O rings and washers don’t wast time with aftermarket ones
also if have to take head off make sure the head dowels are the metal ones not plastic

I payed 70 pounds think for a set of original green Orings and washers, rather that then some cheap aftermarket ones that leak and have to do the job over again

I had the same thought when I still had my D2. Fitted after market o-rings and washers after reading warning from Clivemd. How bad can the after market ones be afterall...

Well 2 weeks later I redid the job with OEM o-rings and washers.

O rings, the diesal starts to bypass them and then fuel starts to dilute the engine oil, oil levels rise lack of lubrication and so on

They leak . Issue is it goes to your oil. So you dilute the oil. I realised something was wrong when I pulled the dipstick and suddenly it was way overfilled.

I had a discussion with Turner Engineering. They mentioned LR has changed suppliers of injector orings recently. Turner supply an OEM top end gasket set, excl head gasket , incl orings, washers for pretty much the same amount as the lr seals. This is the same set they use.

Use TDi injector washers and go to BMG and get Nitrile O rings. Whole lot cheaper
I did my injectors at least 8 years ago and all going well

I would suggest that you first check for a cracked head. After removing the injectors you can lightly sand the injector bores with 1000 water sand paper, then using a torch shine it inside each bore. You should then be able to see the crack, it almost looks like a scratch but the sanding will make it stand out. I also went the seal and washer replacement way first, but you are wasting time and money. It's easy to do the check yourself and no special tools needed if you can bend a buggered or cheap chinese water pump plier handle to lift the injectors out.. Replacing the head is a bigger job but can be done if you are handy and have decent tools. If you want I can post a pic of what the crack on my head looks like
