T8 Ford Ranger - AT Tyre advice needed.

Hi,

I have the standard 265/65/17 AT Conti tyres on my 2019 Ford Ranger 2.0 XLT 4X4 10 Spd Auto. The tyres are klaar, got 80 000km out of them and its time to replace them.

I need some advice as I am not a tyre boffin. My bakkie does mostly tar and a little bit of recreational offroad and light towing during holidays.

My own requirements.
- Must be at atleast a AT tyre (must look good).
- Must not break the bank. R3000 - 3700 a tyre around there and I am happy.
- Would prefer white littering... for the look if possible.

Do I go slightly bigger? Do I go higher or wider? I think if possible higher and not wider? Is it possible to go 265/80/17 ?

A friend has suggested I go with General Grabber AT3s, I like the look of the ATX.

I am in the western cape, northern suburbs - Any specific tyre dealers to go to?

What do you guys suggest? Personal experience with tyres on Ranger would be appreciated.

From my extensive (obsessive if you ask my girlfriend) research, the biggest tyre a ranger can fit is 285/70/r17 but you will have uneven wear and technically apply greater stress to wheel bearings.

The optimal tyre (and most readily available) is either 265/65/r17 or 265/70/R17. There is very little benefit to going wider and will be more detrimental to your consumption.

At those sizes you will not be able to get BFs/coopers.

You can try errolstyres. So far they have the best prices from all my extensive comparisons, (excluding the occasional deal that a retailer has in-store).

Radar Renegades, General Grabbers, Maxxis At980 and Yokahama Geolander AT/ G015 are all good options for that price range.

Cheaper options would be Dunlop AT5 / Kumho Road Venture AT52. The latter is available at Lombard tyres for +/- R2800 when I was there in June and they are high rated tyres for that price range.

Just note if you go from 265/65/R17 to 265/70/R17, your fuel consumption and odometer will be off by +/- 3.5%

Meaning yohr fuel consumption will be 3.5% better than the odometer figures, and you will be driving +/- 3.5kmh faster than indicated on your speedo (at 100kmh)

I have just replaced my standard Conti's with General Grabber ATx in 265/70/17.

You can defenitley feel it is a heavier and stronger tyre. Ride comfort reduced, you can feel smaller bumps more.
You can also feel it pulls a little worse than with the smaller tyres.
From the old worn tyres to the new the diameter difference is quit noticeable.
You hear them at around 80km/h. Not, noisy, you just hear them. At speeds above this, wind and engine noise take over and you dont hear tyres at all.
Best price I could get was R4300 each.

The Generals are very good value, IMHO, and I'd stick to the standard size (OEM)

Man, I had a set of dunlops and went over to BF KO2 and one profile bigger, and didn't notice any difference in rideability, except at highway speeds with the radio off.

Braking is a bit worse than before too.

But to me it feels like the bigger tyre soaks up te bumps more and even like it maaaybe pulls away a bit nicer hahaha
