Its a perfectly good and beautiful road to drive. I would say you could drive it in a sedan easily. There are some corrugations but just take it reasonably slow. 40 to 50Km per hour should be no problem.

Hello folks,
First time poster, long time reader here!
I'm busy planning our Kgalagadi/Nam holiday for next year during the June/July school holidays and I'm trying to finalize our itinerary ahead of reservations opening.
Would you travel the road between Nossob and Mata Mata? I'm aware that the condition is not great but just how bad is it? I'm conscious of keeping our drive times as low as possible with three kids to entertain but I'd also like to be realistic. Travelling from KZN so no getting away from long hours in the car!
Still waiting for a response from DWNP about Rooiputs, fingers crossed.
Please help!

The road from Mata Mata to Nossob is a hard pack undulating rd which crosses the dunes and meets up with the road from TR to Nossob. This stretch can be rough if the rains have fallen and you have wash across the road. Other wise I have seen pre 2000 Corolla's make it to Nossob.
X Trail, no issue. Lots of sighting spots on that road.

Lusted for a Landy but the Pajero was sexier and bigger in the right departments, just like my Missus.

That road is no different to any of the other roads in the park that u will be traveling. I would not worry about it as mentioned above.
The road will not be an issue for your Xtrail. Off road caravan is fine too, there are hundreds of them that visit the park. The road is mostly hard packed, but can be rough in places. I always feel that the TR to Mata-Mata road is less sandy than TR to Nossob. Also the road condition change frequently. Things like wind, rain, traffic and grading has a huge influence.
Deflate you tyres on vehicle AND caravan. Don't be afraid to go down as low as 1.3 bar. If still uncomfortable drop some more; we have gone down to 1.1 bar on occation.
For the kids you can break the stretch nicely at Auchterlorie and Kamqua picnic sites. Before you know you will be pulling into Mata-Mata.
