Default Do thieves steal electric cars?

There are a lot of people anti-electric cars for a number of very good reasons but I was wondering whether electric cars would be as attractive to steal as a diesel/petrol/hybrid? Anyone know the stats on Tesla thefts in SA?

Teslas are very rare in SA, but I suppose your question might as well be expanded to include to the whole range of EV's that are for sale here - mostly Chinese and a few Japanese and Korean.

Getting back to your query, I'd also like to know.
(And then there are also the hybrids and plug-in-hybrids to consider)

Tesla thefts in RSA I would guesstimate to be 0.

Why would anyone steal one in the first place? No market in Africa for them.

Good question. I would imagine EVs are not high on the affirmative shopping lists.

This begs the question; would this change if the electric hilux were to go into production and sold in SA?

There are probably not ample numbers and the thieves consider them to be revolting.

Can't steal them if you can't sell them. There is one on Aurotrader for R2bar. Was on there for a while at R2.6mil but it looks like they struggle to shift it. Seems like you'll be doing the dealership a favour if you steal it off the lot so he can at least get his money back from the insurance

The thieves would steal it because it's got a Toyota badge only to realize afterwards it's completely useless to them.

Its a teslament to the lack of electricity availability that none will get stolen.

Wait until the affirmative shopping brigade learns about the value of batteries and their use in house applications.

I doubt there will be a scrap value market so far.

Cars get stolen on demand. Once they can use the battery will they start.

Teslas have so many communications systems. I doubt if it can be stolen

Thanks for the responses. I need to buy the mother in law a car and was thinking that if EV’s are so unattractive then it might be worthwhile. She doesn’t drive much so if she couldn’t charge it for a couple of days then that wouldn’t be the end of the world. BYD is a new Chinese brand absolutely flooding the EV markets… subsidised by the Chinese govt but a nice looking car at about $44k Aus dollar.

As soon as you go to hybrids then there’s no need to plug in… so they remain attractive. You need a fair amount of home infrastructure for EV charging so that would limit the attractiveness you’d think

I have zero knowledge on EVs, but would like to learn seeing how popular they are, and, I drive one of the company EVs sometimes to meetings etc and its a hoot to drive!
But on this statement, I understand theres fast chargers etc etc, but, is it not possible to just plug it into the wall socket in the garage if you cant afford the fancy chargers?

Toyota and BYD is in cahoots. They will be doing EV research together. That should give one a bit more peace of mind.

We bought a hybrid Toyota for my wife, got a discount on the insurance as no hybrid has been stolen so far according to them - the insurance company.
