Thanks again for uploads. Love them.
Question... what are torn tape / stickers / post-it notes on cubbyhole for? Asking for a friend.

Our pleasure. So those are just bits of tape I stick to my memory cards once I've backed up the footage so I know I can format the card.

New Botswana 2024 YouTube episode: Savuti to Magotho. The road is dusty, bumpy and slow, but not difficult. We exit the park at Mababe Gate and take the transit road to Khwai. At Magotho, we are given a temporary campsite, but there is still a bit of time before sunset so we drop off the trailer and film some elephants and buffalo nearby.

    Your weekly questions Robert...
Are you sure about using hard drives like that? Don't you need Lacie SSD extreme drives like Ed and co? That 18Tb capacity sure to solve all kinds of problems. Please tell us more about your Hard drive setup.
And secondly, how exactly do you run a PC without an inverter?
I like the bit of thin rubber matting cable-tied to the battery positive cable. Neat.

    Thanks mate.

Sure thing. I like the questions - they give me ideas for things to cover in future videos.

Regarding the drives, I would love SSDs but I just can't afford them at the moment (if Lacie feels like sponsoring me, they know where to find me &#128578. I usually shoot 20TB to 30TB on each trip. I need to back that up twice, so I need at least 60TB of hard drive space. So I would need about 30x 2TB SSDs at around R5K per SSD: R150000 total! The small usb-powered 2.5" hard drives are much cheaper than the SSDs but they are about 2 times slower than the big 3.5" drives I use, and I'm already dumping footage for about 3 hours per day.

I prefer to avoid the inverter whenever I can to save power. My MacBook Pro is powered by USB-C and the USB hub I use can power my laptop as well. The hub takes 18V, so I got a 12-18V converter and wired it up with the appropriate barrel plug. Same for the hard drive dock.

If the device comes with a 220V power adapter, you can usually just read the voltage off that and measure the plug. If it takes 220V directly, it is not so simple - I still charge my big V-lock batteries via AC since I have not found a fast DC charger for them.

    Cheers,
    Rob

We also charge our laptops and cameras off a 12v plug and USB-C port in a high watt cigarette lighter plug and have no inverter. They are expensive and seem prone to failure (or at least issues) and it is so nice to be free of one. We keep a cheap-o 300w square wave inverter that cost about $25 USD in case we run into something, but I think we got it out about two times on our year long trip.

New YouTube video: "River Crossings and Hyena Pups". It's our first morning in Khwai and we go out for an early game drive. First we need to cross the Mbudi River. Rob bravely walks the crossing to check the depth then Andy drives the 4x4 over. We head towards Khwai Village and find the hyena den. The hyenas are still hidden but we come back later and find some cute pups playing outside the den. After sunset the adults arrive to feed the pups.

New episode is up on YouTube: 'Khwai to Maun.' We start our day at the hippo pool near Khwai Community Campsite and get some shots of the hippos returning to the water. We then siphon drinking water and empty a jerry can of diesel into the Land Cruiser before driving to Maun where Andy treats Rob to lunch at Nando's. We get home in the dark as usual.

New Botswana 2024 episode is up on YouTube. We are camping at Magotho in the Khwai Community area. We set up the full Metalian Genie X tent, and Rob tries to sell the viewers a gas water heater. Later, we drive to the hyena den and Rob goes over the presets of his Red V-Raptor camera. We get back to camp after dark and cook a massive fillet on the fire.

New episode is up on YouTube. It's Rob's birthday. Andy gives him a present then they head out in the dark to find some animals and Rob tries to sell his torches to the viewers. Later that morning they film some lechwe and a pack of African wild dogs or painted wolves race past and kill one of them.
