    Question Nakuru - Amboseli

I've been following the thread of the best route from Samburu to Amboseli, and saw some good advice there. I have a similar question: in a few weeks I plan to drive from Nakuru to Amboseli. I'm not sure if it's doable in one day, but if necessary I'll take two days for it. What would be the best route to take from Nakuru to Amboseli?

    Thanks for any advice.

From Nakuru to Nairobi there is only one option - down the main road. Depending on the traffic, it will take you 3-4 hours.

From Nairobi to Amboseli, it all depends whether you overnight in Nairobi - and where you overnight in Nairobi. If you are overnighting in the Karen/Langata area, my recommendation is the route on this thread https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...-to-Samburu-NR. To quote: This is the route I would recommend getting to Amboseli from Nairobi: Karen to Ngong and then on to Kiserian and Isinya. Just before Kajiado, turn east on the road signposted “Imaroro D524”which connects to the C102 Emali to Loitokitok. This is an interesting route through Maasailand. It is to be recommended as it avoids any time on the main Mombasa road. You then enter Amboseli NP through the Kimana Gate.

However, with the new Chinese elevated toll expressway through central Nairobi, unless you are overnighting in Nairobi, then it might be worth your while to continue on the main road to Athi River. There you can decide whether to turn south down to Kajiado and take the route documented above - or have a trial of nerves and continue on the main Nairobi-Mombasa road to Emali.

It will take some considerable time from Nakuru to Amboseli. And you ought to do this in daylight hours.

    Safari njema.

Thanks for your advice, I have programmed the route into my GPS. One more question: why do you prefer Kimana gate over Iremito gate?

Kimana is the main gate. It is now tar all the way to the Kimana gate (previously the dirt road was horribly corrugated).

I hope you've got accommodation booked - amboseli is going to be busy in June. Enjoy when you do get there and drive safe. Day-light hours rather than night driving.

One does not need to book for KWS public campsites - indeed, there is no method for booking public campsites in Kenyan national parks. And, I’m pretty sure, there is no need for booking in community campsites outside Amboseli national park. If, however, you are intending on staying in a lodge, then I would advise booking.

It was just a note as I've looked at Amboseli and there was little accomodation with-in the park - yes - campsites are possibly available. thanks @WW

This forum relies on the goodwill of members. The payback from those asking questions is a trip report or some sort of feedback.
