Default Advice on roads in Moz

Hi folks I’m looking for advice on the following route:

    • from Hazyview to Maputo then to Ponta do Ouro (N200) via Catembe
    • From Ponta do Ouro to Kosi Bay…… and then to Durban.

Specifically what is the road from Maputo to Ponta and then Kosi Bay like. Does it need 4x4 and would you travel alone.

    Any info would be appreciated.

Tar road all the way. might need 4 x 4 in Ponta if staying over, haven't been in Ponta for a long time. I have just made a mistake after taking the right turn and then the very soon after, left turn to get onto the bridge in Maputo. trust the signs . Be careful for speed traps otherwise a nice drive. Speedbumps and cattle grid when going past the Maputo Elephant reserve. Also normally a road block at Salamanga, looking for stolen cars from SA.

That bridge to Catembe is special... enjoy!!

We where there end of last year. Maputo to Ponta is good tar road. Ponta to Kosi as well. Stick to speed limits.

Maputo itself was a mess with roadworks.

As others stated 4x4 in Ponta dependent on where you want to go. The further you get from Ponta on the side roads the more you might need 4x4.

    Hi
In October it will be my first time going to Moz but will be traveling from Secunda to Ponta de Ouro.
I am contemplating going through Swaziland.
I want to enter Swaziland at Oshoek and exit at Namaacha, and then on to Ponta.

Any suggestions and info on the road conditions?

It's been yonks - so condition I can't assist, however join the DriveMoZ group, get a sticker, and KEEP to the speed limit. Like exactly what they indicate, you drive.

The road from Naamacha is very scenic, but has a few pot holes so be careful. Ask at the border for directions to get onto the N200 at Boane, it turns of in the town. There was a bit of a deviation just outside the town of Boane to get across the river. Not sure if they have fixed this or not.
The N200 is a brand new road. It joins the the main route from Maputo to Ponta eventually and if you get on at Boane you will miss the Maputo trafic.
Just note that it joins the main road just after a railway bridge, the cops love standing at the t-junction waiting for people to come over the bridge at a smudge over 60km/h..... don't say I did not warn you....
The main road from Maputo to Ponta is very good, as before, you might need a 4x4 in Ponta it self as these roads are sandy.

From Kosibay the road is pretty bad and Jozini is a madhouse. From there it is higway again.

You do not need a Drive Moz sticker....

There have been some changes and so the police stops have reduced and are mainly in fixed locations. There are much more restrictions on mobile speed check points. You can get a map of the permanent police checkpoints in the area here
