Hey guys
Sorry to Emmie for hijacking your post. I cant open a new post 😭.
I'm also in the market for a first time 4x4. I'm considering a 2012 auto fortuner 3d4d with 250k km and FSH . I also intend to eventually use this as a daily+-50km.
What are your expert opinions on this for long term ownership and reliability. Is the manual better than auto in terms of durability and reliability?
I have been considering 3tdi Prado used, but see that many had engine issues along the way. I am avoiding the 4l V6 due to consumption and prioritise long range. Is the price of parts and repairs on Prado's significantly more that tuners?
Feel free to add on any further advice that you feel necessary
Thanks (and apologies to Emmie)

Emmie it's time to give us some ideas of what you are thinking or planning.
Just imagine all the opinions already on here being repeated.
Pajero shorty is my choice for you.

My 2 cents, I think there will always be something you will regret; (price, milage, fuel consumption, colour, auto-manual, etc) that just isn’t quite what you wanted, it is just part of buying a used vehicle. After I purchased my Hilux, I regret it for the first 2-3 months (only due to the fuel consumption)Seven years later and the consumption has got worse (due to the bigger tyres
) but I would not change it for anything. Point is, we buy to best our budget allows. In January I purchased a 2013 Suzuki Grand Vitara, it wasn’t quite what I wanted, but my budget was 120 grand and it was the only low milage 4x4 SUV that fitted into my budget.

That apparently is correct, although I doubt it that the manual would be "far" lighter on fuel. And a V6? - well that would have require discipline at another level
Anyway, I am not dissing a GV, just putting an actual consumption out there. That vehicle is almost history anyway, those that are on the road is getting long in the tooth now, and as with all higher km vehicles, a higher maintenance risk, if you did not initially bought it new or with low km's and looked after it.
Enjoy your GV!

When one has to count you Rands (like most of us!) any of the Japanese bakkies , in whatever configuration that works for you, will do - only you will know if SC, extended cab or DC will work for you, same with 4x2 or 4x4.
If general SUV the Renault Duster, will do the job within its limitations obviously, or again the SUV version of the Japanese bakkies; and of course the Suzuki Jimny as mentioned.
If just you, then you probably don't need the size of the bakkie SUV's or the (relative) discomfort of a bakkie itself.
If just 1 or 2 people and you want a SUV the choices are probably Duster, Jimny or as said Pajero SWB, but I don't think you get them new anymore (and obviously if so will be quite a bit more than the other 2).
All of these should be very reliable which is even more important considering your "brief".
What I like about the Jimny is its excellent resale value once you decide it has served it purpose or does not work for you or you had enough or whatever, with the only negative being that it is not nippy, especially not on the open road. It's actually ok in town. If you can settle to cruise at a sedate pace and accept if you are stuck behind a truck you need to wait for open road ahead, but also behind you, then I think it is a wonderful choice.
Whatever your choice Emmile L, enjoy the hunt!

Buying a 4x4 is a bit like chosing a puppy from a litter. You don’t. You let one chose you. In our case a Defender 90 TDi 300 chose us when we thought we wanted a VW Syncro with Cortina V6 motor. Defender was twice the price, and then some in the years that still follow. Zero regrets, and I mean that. Zero.

Naes is Sean backwards, and it sounds like 'nice', so I drive a nice Landy.
In a Landrover the other vehicle is your crumple zone.
Raise your kids with a Landrover addiction. That way, they won't have any money left for a drug addiction.

Nope.

To make you procrastinate even more, have a look at the Chinese Jeep wannabees.
