Default East Coast / KZN Day trip.. 23 June ?

    Esteemed (mostly) KZN Community members.

I have been appointed (read coerced > Gungets.. I am looking at you) by the KZN region brain trust to arrange an informal KZN GTG / Day trip thing.

Unfortunately / fortunately I have not been blessed with much of an imagination, evidenced by my favourite colour being white and my favourite brand being Toyota.

A such, I am experiencing some difficulty in thinking of a venue where we might have a day trip GTG, with slight 4x4 stretching abilities but mostly a braai and a kuier.

    Venues I have considered are:

    • Killarney – Hillcrest - Don’t allow alcohol on site….(I shudder!)
    • Clifton Canyon - Hillcrest - R500 per vehicle (possibly too much for a day trip braai)
    • Histakes Cato Ridge (meh)
    • Gwahumbe- Mid Illovo / Eston (100 per vehicle, 90 per adult and 60 per child)
    • Eston Valley 4x4 (250 per vehicle)

So unless someone can chime in with a better idea, I propose the following:

A forum day trip GTG @ Gwahumbe on Sunday 23RD June 2024.

    Attendees:-

    Rookie - Day
    Alex +1 - Day
    Kippie - Day
    Peter1949 - Day / Might Camp.
    Terryc +1 - Day
    Richard + Lisa
    Gavin49 + Jennifer - Day
    Maml -
    Miershoop

Well given the state of the roads anybody's home will be a good 4x4 excursion.

There are some great drives in the Inanda valley that cost niks/nada.

And there are a plethora of great cheap pubs in the Bothas Hill / Drummond area.

I may be wrong, but I think most would just like a nice drive and some pub and grub, not a proper 4x4 excursion.

That doesn't preclude a camping style weekend.

Salt Rock still sounds nice to me.

Perhaps there's room for both. Keith's Pub and Grub is a nice easy setup, you just decide a date and location, tell everyone and get a basic count, book and you're done.

But the idea of a whole day jol is also good, a bit of exploring, braai for lunch and a leisurely drive home. I'm not much of an "obstacles" kind of oke (gaaan, ask why I'm here), somitll.be a bitore of me wandering around, away from town, absorbing nature.

But I reckon we've got a big enough group of people that we'll have a debt group together even if softies like me can't make it.

I actually have zero control over my life right now, but I'd say nail the date, 23 June, you'll habe enough takers for somewhere like Gwahumbe.

I'm with Trevor on the "obstacles" but if I have to drive all that way, why not make it a stay over?
WE would drag the trailer with and stay for a night or three.

Keith, we are always available for a Friday lunch at Salt Rock! (Pensioners discount!) It is also only about 10 minutes away
    from us.

What are the facilities like and any idea of the overnight camping rates?
If so would you go through Fri or Sat?
Anyway the date is OK for me, wherever we end up going within reason. (reason = not too far or expensive

Would anyone here who has been to Eston give us a bit of firsthand info about the venue.
And perhaps in the future we can organise a get together there.

    Eston is an excellent venue.

    - There is an awesome firepit area and deck right on the river

    - The ablutions are new and clean

    - The campsites are well immaculate, grassed and have a tap and solar motion sensored light (no 220v)

    - There is all types of drives, but a hit with this group would be up to Sunset Summit that overlooks the valley. Almost all their "obstacles" have escape routes around so you can still go on a drive with others that are wanting to do the obstacles.

It looks like Gwahumbe is the preferred option. It has some ok birding, some animals to look at and good scenery. The coffee at the restaurant is also great.

It is also soft roader friendly. The track to the braai site is just a dirt road with BIG speed humps. IF people want a gentle challenge then the track back to the gate from the cave will fill that need, but that is not where we will braai. We will braai by the river.

They were still repairing storm damage from 2022 when we were there.
The area by the A frame huts was destroyed. The brick building of the kitchen and bathroom was washed away.
The picnic camping area by the pizza oven was still amazing.
Down by the Angels Pools along the river was absolutely beautiful.
I am looking forward to going back.

The road down to the campsite is quite steep with giant speed bumps along the route.
Lower down there is quite a rough section, and ironically there is a signpost showing the 4x4 route which we found easier than the normal route.

The owners might have graded the road since we were there.
The farm unfortunately had bad storm damage. All of the damage was on the list to be attended to. Just that it is time consuming.
The main lodge also burnt down.
That was in progress getting rebuilt plus the kitchen.

I have no doubt that everything has been fixed and rebuilt to better than before.
But the road down, it would be best to ask the owners.
