Gwahumbe is a great venue. We probably go 2-3 times a year. Fully rebuilt and recovered after the fire.

I was there about 6 weeks ago and a lot of the roads crossing the river have been washed away with rains earlier this year. You can drive down to the river and picnic spot by the waterfall.

Roads such as those to the cave were closed. You can get down but not out.

Might be best to put in a phone all and check state of camping areas, road repairs/river crossings etc

I think I will be IN for this, may even take advantage of their special midweek option and camp there for a day or three then join for the braai.
Any others "Bok" for this ?

I actually see that as a bit of a problem. Previously only Little Sani needed a proper 4x4, the rest could be done with Double cab or an AWD SUV.

We need a proper update on conditions. Even the waterfall exit can be quite testing. Seen more than one AWD towed out of there.
In fact even been the tower - but what would I know, according to some forum member I don't know how to drive and talk out of my ringpiece.

Okay, so I had a chat with the reception at Gwahumbe and she said the roads are fixed from the flood damage but that you would need 4x4 to get down into the valley.
Then she said a 4x2 with a difflock would also manage and that it would be no problem to get a caravan to the camp site.
That being said, not sure if I would take a normal road caravan down there myself based on previous road conditions.
They still have availability in the campsite for those wanting to camp for the weekend or longer.
So based on that I would be inclined to think that the roads are all okay.
She said that the road past the cave is driveable in a normal 4x4 also and that they have repaired the river crossings in both valleys.

If the climb out from the braai area is nasty we can go back the other way.

If foreigners are allowed (do we need passports ) we could very well be interested to join you. We need to go somewhere between coming back from KNP and going to KTP and WC.

How fantastic, as others have said, most welcome!

Just a note to all, the idea here is a kuier / a GTG out in nature. The trail not a trial, and there should be no tribulations. River crossings are to be avoided. Its not a test your or your vehicle's capabilities. A sedan wont make it, but anything else should.

I know the place well. Very well.

A Road caravan is a big NoGo.

Unless you camp at or near reception.

Which actually isn't the worst idea in the world, maybe even a good idea if they let you.

You can park the van and join the others on rides and braais.

I'm hesitant, we're heading off for a week away on the following Friday, riding the Hluhluwe-Imfolosi MTB challenge on the Saturday, heading to uMkhuze on the Sunday for 3 days. So camping not really on, the day drive could be on. But, there looks like a decent sized group, forge on, should be a good day.

Do we have a list of those attending the day out only; and those intending to spend a day or two prior camping?
I would prefer not to be camping alone just "in case".
Would my old Suuz be OK to and from the campsite proper, or should I also rather consider the alt. camp near reception?
Kippie did you take a drive to the campsite?

To help those who haven’t been there before, I did the 4x4 track from reception down to the river and across to the waterfall and back up again in my stock Subaru Forester. Drive a good line and no issues. And with stock road tyres.

This should give some indication of the level of difficulty.

With the river crossings repaired I would happily give the drive down to Mermaids pool a go in the Subaru.

The only road I would avoid with the Subaru is the one to the cave. The road down is fine but the river crossing and steepish climb out might require a bit more omph and ground clearance.
