Default Maputo Special Reserve - camping

We are considering camping at Lagoa Xinguti camp site in the Maputo Elephant Reserve en route to Santa Maria, has anyone camped there before and is it recommended, any highlights or disappointments? We are thinking to stay there for 2 nights

We have just returned from a camping trip to Ponta Membene and stopped to look at the Xinguti campsite on the way. It looks great but I would rather stay over at Ponta Membene for 2 nights on the way to Santa Maria. It took us 4 hours to reach Ponta Membene from the Futi gate. The road is quite tough but manageable if you not in a hurry. We took it slowly birding along the way. We didn’t go to Santa Maria but I would think that it is another 3 hours travel from Membene to get there. We were in campsite 5 which was lovely. Some of the campsites may be difficult for rooftop tents. Happy to advise further if you have any other questions.

We love staying at Ponta Membene, both the lodges and the camping.
The camping facilities are excellent with each camp having their own toilets, washing up area and constant hot water. They also have setup a great fire place for each camp site.

You can see more about Ponta Membene here

    Hi All,

My eye fell on this thread and am also keen to learn more about Xinguti. Membene was already booked up for our planned dates next year. Specifically the caravan friendly site (think No 1?).

We will most likely secure space a bit higher for 3 or so nights at Mukumbo but keen to spend time in the actual Park and Xinguti might just be the answer?

Anybody know of specific sites in the Park that are more suited to camping with an offroad caravan?

    Any pointers warmly received!

The campsites at Lagoa Xinguti are quite tight. We managed to fit our two camping trailers and ground tent reasonably easily in terms of area, but it took some maneuvering to get them into position between the trees.

We also camped at Lagoa Nela which is completely off-grid i.e. no water or electricity. There was lots of space and it has a beautiful fire pit/boma area overlooking the lake.

Beautiful place in general. All the staff we dealt with were very helpful and friendly.

    Edit: We visited Dec 2023

We are planning on going to membene this Dec.
Two questions, where is the best spot coming from kosi bay to stock up with 2m and tipo? Secondly, can you drive sand roads through the park to ponta mamoli?

you can get 2m in do ouro easy and it's a quick diversion on tar . you can also do your sim there at the same time . but you can kill 2 birds with one stone and get both tip and sim with Facebook drivemoz group. if time is to short to take delivery of the sim then the tip get online though the hollard link that drive moz provide. it is emailed to you. the sand roads are very much driveable in the reserve but slow and bumpy. beware of locals driving like nutters in 2 wheel drives . we went to mucumbo and membene which were great , I'm sure mamoli the same it's very close

    Thanks.

If by tip you mean temporary import permit then not available online, only at borders. DriveMoz does offer 3rd party insurance online or look up www.hollsure.co.za
