Default 2002 Engel get's new lease on life

My +- 2002 stainless steel Engel 40 liter fridge started to loose capacity so I took it to a home based repairer in Monta Vista who replaced the compressor and power supply for very reasonable price and she lives again.

Set to cycle much more infrequently as the Engel compressor always did. Runs about 1,2 amps higher than the Engel (same as my 65 liter N.Lunar) but very happy with the job.
The guy only works evenings so it took about 6 months to get it back but it's only a spare so didn't push the guy.

On another note, when he dropped off the Engel he noticed my N.Lunar was stored and not running and suggested I should rather leave it on. He say's he gets many in with holes in the evaporator pipes due to apparently the insulation material eating into the pipe material. Then he says it's scrap and only option other than new is to send it to N.L where they fit a new box and transfer all your old parts.

And here I am under the impression that Engel is bullet proof as claimed by all.
    And 6 months!
    No thanks.

You may have misread the post.
Thats an Engel that has been working since 2002, that's now 22 years. If that isn't reliable, I don't know what is.
6 months is the time to repair from a backyard mechanic- Not the Engels fault.

My one bought second hand in circa 2010 (so probably also 20 years old) is mint and works like a bomb.

You don't think 22/5 years is a good innings for a fridge. ?

I have 3 engels. Still running strong and in every day use. Probably 12 years now. My snowmasters lasted 3 years and had to throw them away. Biggest waste of money.

I have a 2006 Engel, stopped working in 2012. It was cheaper to get a Waeco 50l than to repair the Engel. The Waeco is still going strong. My 2005 Waeco been repaired once for R2800 and also still working.

I bought an Engel 42 l in the early 2000 from a gent Dumping it at the dumps ...Because it did not switch on. And i paid R5 for it .....

Went home Fiddled around and found the little on of switch was faulty. If you pressed it just the right way it stayed on. Pushed a match inbetween the plate and the switch and she is still going like that today.

It stopped cooling about 18 months ago . Engel wants to replace everything except the box.
I bought a Danfos BD65 Compressor . Removed the old Engel compressor and its powersupply box and fitted the DB65 in its place .

Very happy with my Engel . It runs permanently when we not camping

Please note that the dial is numbered only with numbers 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5. But I included some in-between settings in my diagram, as well, in order to finetune the temps for my own personal needs. This data is stored on my phone for reference purposes. I just took a screen shot of the diagram. So pardon the quality.

    Maybe this can help somebody.

Nicely done - I also have an in fridge after market temperature measure in a 2000 odd vintage Engel 42 litre running almost permanently and about 1.8 - 1.9 correlates with 0 degrees C so we are close.

I had to do a compressor conversion to a Danfoss compressor and power supply cost R5000, running on 3.2A. I'm very happy.Click image for larger version.
