There use to be a vibrant 4x4 group FS4x4. Not sure if they are still doing trips/trails/GTGs. Some of them joined SARZA (Freestate) and they have done an excellent job in providing support for a few disasters in the region, nationally and even abroad. Stuck in the Mud and Doringbos 4x4 can be fun and the Eastern Free State and Southern Drakensberg is only a few hours drive away.

FS 4x4 is very much alive. I have been a member of the group since it's beginning and still is.

JeepersCreepers, I think you've got your seasons a bit switched around.

Autumn is the most pleasant season of them all. Spring is the windy season here with the August Month winds.

Autumn is my most favorite season with the most pleasant mild days, mostly with almost no wind. Nice cool nights. Perfect camping weather, just as I like it. The mozzies are gone, the veld is still green after the summer rains. The rivers and creeks still full of water and it is neither cold nor warm.

I just want to mention that abundant wildlife can virtually be found on your doorstep in Bloem. Game farms and loges right around the "City". I think the only wild animal you will not see around here, is Elephant.

If you are a outdoors, camping, hunting wildlife enthusiast, Bloem will not be boring to you. Three major and a few other small dams, close to Bloem, if you like camping and fishing. And if I am correct, the Free State have the most large state owned dams of all the provinces.

And central to all the major natural jewels in our country. Most such places within 800 km from Bloem.

More than 30 years ago we stayed in Bloem for close to 4 years. Often times my wife longed for, and wanted to visit, the family in the Cape.

So I would drive her over to Kimberley to visit her cousin there. Kimberly was then still in the Cape Colony mos.

Not exactly what my wife had in mind when she said whe want to see the family in the Cape......

Ek het 17 jaar in Bloem gebly. Daai winters is iets om aan gewoond te raak, asook die ekstreme verskil tussen oggend en mid-dag temperatures. Dink nie daar is nog 'n dorp in SA waar die min en maks temperature soo baie verskil nie.

In daardie dae het Bloemfontein die mooiste meisies gehad, weet nie of dit vandag nog so is nie. Ek is middel 90's daar weg.

Besoek die plek jaarliks om weer die oud weermag vriende en basis (1 SDB) te gaan besoek.

Teen die berg, Naval Hill, is daai 'n wit perd met klippe uitgepak. Elke keer as 'n maagd haar maagdelikheid verloor kap daai perd sy poot.
Oor naweke het dit geklink soos die Durban July perderen.

Die Vader behoed my dat ek weer in Bloem sal opeindig. Soos wat mense hul salarisse by casino's blaas, sal ek my salaris by (Dreiers) skuus, dis Bester Biltong gaan blaas.

Besters is nie die enigste plek wat top klas biltong maak in Bloem nie.

Van Zyls maak ook top kwaliteit biltong, asook AAA vleis se tak in die middestad.

Ek onthou vir Van Zyl's - hulle was daar net buite Tempe by die Cathleens hek - oorkant Tempe golfbaan - Dan Pienaars laan?

Daai oubaas het sulke dik tros vingers gehad met die klein tannietjie wat die til geslaan het. Ek het gehoor die Oom is oorlede so het aangeneem hulle deure het toegemaak.

Bly as hulle nog bestaan - sal hulle gaan soek as ek weer daar kom.

Onthou ook die naam Triple A.

What a terrible place!
It rates with Adendorff - a very easy way to buy yourself bankrupt!
Absolutely heaven for the carnivore!
We walked out after buying more than double what we planned.

Must also add Bester is one of the cleanest and more hygenic butchers I have ever seen..Its like the woolies of butchers.
For a lekker vibe ,some beer and gin tasting and decent steak go have supper at Brew and still tonight.

And of course, if you love mountains, Lesotho is 1,5 hours away and the north-eastern Cape (Rhodes, Barkly East) are stunning with many mountain passes to enjoy.
