Default 2024 Beitbridge Zimborder and others fees

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere:

Anybody that crossed Beitbridge border - Zimbabwe side since 1st March 2024 that can give info on latest/new fee structure, please?

I have attached a document from Zimborders website.

What is the exact Beitbridge border access toll fee for a vehicle and trailer/caravan (not carrying commercial goods)

On top of the Zimborders: Beitbridge Border access fee you also pay

    • Bridge toll fee USD 9 (can pay in SAR)
    • ZIMRA you give your TIP Reference Number.
    And pay:
    a - Third Party Insurance USD30.00
    b - Carbon Tax USD10.00
    c - Road Access USD10.00

I'll appreciate someone with recent experience to give some info, please?

    Thanks for sharing.

Speaking of which I will cross the border at Pandamatenga coming from Botswana with a Namibian registered Hilux in a month.

    Would the same fees apply?

So 50 USD for the car + 75 USD as international visitor for 6 days, correct?

    Thanks

    Hi All

With our July / August 2024 trip to Gonarezhou we will be entering at that top of the park and exiting at the bottom. We were hoping to do the new Border river crossing but this crossing doesn't seem likely to be open in August. Could someone advise if it is possible or practicable to drive from Mabalauta through Beitbridge back to JHB in one day. I'm not sure how long the dirt road from Mabalauta to the A4 takes. Will be towing Bush Lapa's

    Many thanks Gavin

    Hi Anne-Marie

The “Zimborder” fee was implemented after the border upgrade. The fee is currently $28 and is payable in Rands or Dollars (US) or you can use credit card. The Rand amount runs with the exchange rate of the day.

    Regards
    William

Thanks William, true the Zimborders fee was implemented already in 2022 while the upgrade was almost finished. We paid in 2022 $40 ($27 + $13) because we pulled our own caravan.
The same fee was applicable in 2023.

If you rented a car or trailer you were classified as commercial attracting a higher toll/fee.

The $28 is the new rate since Feb 2024 for a single passenger car (an increase of $1 compared to 2023)

My question is for a car with a trailer/caravan?
There seems to be confusion as on the Zimborder's Toll Fees list (see picture below) a car with a trailer is shown as a LIGHT GOODS VEHICLE at a rate of $83

I believe some tourists in 2024 were already asked to pay a Zimborders fee of $83 and others $60 if pulling a trailer to enter Zimbabwe via Beitbridge.

    You also have to pay:
    a - Third Party Insurance USD30.00
    b - Carbon Tax USD10.00
    c - Road Access USD10.00
And Bridge toll fee of $9

On your way back in 2024 do you pay again Zimborders fee of USD28 or ($83 or $60) and bridge toll fee USD9?

It seems the worst case scenario in 2024 to enter and exit Zimbabwe via Beitbridge is:
    $83x2 + $9x2 + $30 + $10 + $10 = Total of $234?

The Zimborders fee in 2023 was $27 for a passenger car and $40 if you pulled a trailer ($27 + $13). We were asked to pay the same fee when exiting Zimbabwe via Beitbridge back to SA + $9 for bridge toll fee.
    Total of $148

In 2022 the Zimborders fee was also $27 for a single passenger vehicle and $40 with a trailer. We were not charged anything except the $9 bridge toll to return.
    Total of $108

Tx Gavin, glad Bertha is back.
Makes more sense. Although on the procedure point 3 - Port Health no longer requirement - covid

And on Requirement doc. It states Zimborder $27 - that increased on 1 March to $28.

It makes sense that the trailer fee $10 is added to the Zimra fees of $50.

So to summarize to enter Zim:
$9 for Zinara bridge toll fee
    $28 for Zimborders
$60 for Zimra includes a trailer
    Total $97

    To exit Zim
    $28 Zimborders
    $9 Zinara
    Total $37

Hi all, we’re just back and the fees going into Zim and exiting are what we also experienced … roughly $150 total cost. As for exchange rate, it was obviously inflated meaning our total quoted Rand cost was around R3,000. We paid USD.

There is a toll gate on the way to Ngundu which also takes Rands. I think we paid R80 … but because the road was so good I didn’t take a note .

There is a few km of poor road close to Ngundu where road works are underway.

We were surprised not to be hassled at any of the security checks en route …. In short, the travel cost is about R3,000 for border and tolls.

    Hope this helps.

We crossed into Zim through Beitbridge on the 10 May 2024 and had an horrendous experience.

We thought we knew what the fee structure was and the procedure.

We were hassled by the con men from the car park until we got to counter 1, where the woman behind the counter indicated that I should get help from a person sending behind an open counter next to counter 1 on the right. This man produced the customs forms for us to fill in. He was quick to point out the clause that stated that all items over $200 needed to be listed. After adding up the cameras, tent, fridge, camping equipment etc, he then told us that we would have to pay 75% of this as a custom import tax which we would then be able to claim back at a later stage, but this would take some considerable time. As I am a photographer this amount was considerable. It didn't help that he said that I may never get it back. When I said that I didn't have nearly enough cash to pay this, the con started. "give me what you have and I will make it right". At this point our passport disappeared and we were left helplessly at their mercy, of which he showed none. I was left in a vulnerable position as I did not know what the law was. This con artist then crumpled up our forms and got us to write out a new one with "returnable personal effects" and no value and in collusion with the uniformed police man relieved us of some considerable cash.

This experience was very different to our Beitbridge crossing shortly after the new building was opened, when there were tourism personnel that actually help us through with no problems.

So what is the law? If you know what the law is you can prevent yourself from being scammed.

Thanks Nimrod, we are considering a return trip next year to Gonarezhou and your experience, whilst deplorable, is very useful. We crossed on 29 th May and turned 12 th June and I can only guess because we had prior booking at Gonarezhou meant we had no hassle. Seems like we were lucky.

Your comments will be debated with our other tour partners and will help in the decision on next years tour. Many thanks and condolences on your experience.

Thanks Nimrod. We are crossing on the 28th of June, and the sharing of your experience helps. Despite hearing what others have said re the easy crossing at Beit, I am apprehensive given past experiences. My take on it is that unless you are being assisted by the Tourism people, you are considered fair game.

Were they (Zim Tourism) not here on the day of your crossing?

Thanks very much "CrossingZimbabwe" for this doc. The most up to date doc on procedures yet and the actual pictures help very much. Heartening the emphasis on anti-corruption .

As someone who was there this past weekend. I will say that the instructions are very useful but still require further clarification.

In my case, the only people who were clearly there in an authorised, official capacity where the people behind the counters, so I need clarity, on who actually has authority and who doesn't and most importantly how do we identify them.

As an example, the self-help tablets didn't seem to be on/working on Friday when we arrived, where they working? There were no blue forms to be accessed, presumably because the people running the scams took all of them, so we couldn't even self-declare.

One matter that you are not properly accounting for is that signal is very bad in the border zone, therefore using any comminication device to resolve matters will prove challenging at the best of times, leaving travellers generally frastrated with their limited options.
