Yes it is - unless they close it for blasting. They are redoing the entire pass. Probably for the next 2 years.

The delay is about 30min but obviously depends. Basically its one way up then down - for the slowest truck.

Consider going via Cederberg - pakhuis and botterkloof passes. When last I did botterkloof it was a bit hairy - so suggest you get more info on it before going.

Jy eindig altyd agter tien trokke en ten minste 20 to 30 ander karre. Almal is te bang on die lorries verby te steek en teen die tyd wat jy amper die laaste lorries en bang gat karre verby steek, is jy by die volgende stop en go en jy beland weer agter 'n hoop verkeer...... Nee wat, die 5 stop en go plekke tussen Hanover en net noord van Colesberg het my 50 % langer opgehou as die 35 of 45 minute op die Vanrynspas....

Just did this last week to Kgalagadi and back. On the way up we chanced van Rhyns pass. Delayed by 1hour 20 min.
so on the way home we took the R364 through Botterkloof, Pakhuis Pass via Clanwilliam. Way nicer- would recommend.

Also recently did it, waiting around 20 mins but we arrived at the back of the line. N7 to Springbok is only 100km odd more going that route so also an option, will likely be a similar travel time

I sometimes go via Sutherland and join the R27 just before the turnoff to Upington. The gravel section between Sutherland and the R27 is normally in a good condition.
