Default Gen3 Pajero - Autobox vs Tyre sizes.

Heya folks. A friend of mine has a 2003 Gen 3 Pajera. 3.2L Diesel auto.

He's currently rolling on standard tyre sizes - 265/70R16 - but is considering moving up a bit to 265/75R16.

He's getting conflicting advice on whether these tyre sizes work well with the diesel autoboxes. Another friend of mine has confirmed his petrol Paj auto runs fine on the larger size, but he did mention the diesels are a little more finicky.

He asked my opinion on this, but I don't know Pajeros. Any advice or thoughts in this regard ?

    Thanks.

I had that size on a Petrol Paj and it was fine. Having said that the petrol revs sit at 2500rpm at 120 and the diesel at 2000rpm.

On an older diesel paj I would stick to stock, on the newer 140kw/450nm with a map I would go one size up.

Is a Pajera the female version of a Pajero?

    Everything is a hammer.

I know nothing - about them. Apparently not even how to spell the name correctly...

That said, the three Mitsu's (2x Paj and 1x Triton) impressed me on the weekend.

    Gen 3 is a 3.2. If it is a 2.8, It should be a gen 2.

I did that on a gen 3. It was okey, but when towing it was hunting gears and "dead spots" appeared at times when I needed "skop". 10k kms later, I replaced that with standard size again.

    Never again.

    Hi

I am running 285/75/R16 on my gen3 paj3.2 auto with no issue exept that the fuel usage has gone up. Most of the aussies run their gen3/gen4 pajera's with 265/75/16 or 285/75/16 with no issues at all

I have to say, I have a remap, freeflow exhaust, egr delete and bigger intercooler and oil cooler for the auto box.

    It's a 4% difference.
    Similar to one extra passenger.
The gearbox doesn't know you run different size wheels; the engine revs to wheelspeed ratio is still the same.
There is post by Bostoe that didn't like it. I've always respected his posts, so maybe if you "dilute" the 121 kW by 4 %, you cross the enjoyment threshold.
On my previous car, I fitted 265/7516 (from 265/6018) and honestly couldn't notice the difference. But, it had 500 Nm and 146 kW.
The extra comfort and ability off-road was huge, though.

    We have had similar treads
265/70/16=265/65/17=265/60/18 , going up one in profile is the limit for a auto box so 265/75/16 is ok 265/70/17 ok and 265/65/18
    Hope this helps
As vehicles got never manufactures wanted to add bigger rims for looks
Any bigger and the auto box may hunt at 120 for the best gear
