    Default Vlinders vir Mari

    Schmetterling - German
    Farfalla - Italian
    Butterfly - English
    Uvemvane - Zulu
    Vlinder - Afrikaans en Nederlands
    Papillot - French
    Mariposa - Spanish

Butterflies have names from the ridiculous to the sublime in various languages. They are gorgeous and unique.

I was surprised to see we don't have a butterfly, or for that matter, a dragonfly thread where we can deposit our sightings of these gorgeous creatures. They tricky to photograph. If a lucky photographer manages to creep up on one the subject may fly away before the necessary adjustments could be made. This means that this thread won't be the longest or have heavy contributions, understandably so.

I was thinking about the courageous life that Mari lived. And how we could keep that courage in remembrance. And I thought "why don't we create a thread along the lines of 'shoot the churches' where we can deposit what butterflies cross our paths when we are out adventuring?' And each time when we do, we bring Mari and her legacy in remembrance. Let the beauty that she leaves behind be added to in some small way.

Now, butterflies and dragonflies are tricky subjects, so the photos won't always be star quality. They maybe an opportunistic moment with a cell phone or playing around with a new lense etc. Let' grab whatever opportunity life brings to grab a photo of one and deposit it here.

I'm sure lots of you have at least one or two in in your archives. So go have a little dig and let's get this train leaving the station. And who knows? We may learn about these fantastical creatures and gain a better appreciation for them than we imagined setting off. Please feel free to share your knowledge too.

    Ready... steady... go!

I think it is a brilliant idea, Emmie!

A friend of my wife sent this to her some time ago, I don't know where it comes from or how she managed to capture the photo.

    Also Skoenlapper?
Or is that technically a little different from a Vlinder?

Skoenlapper and vlinder are synonyms. Lepidoptera are lepidoptera by any other exotic or not name

Dragonflies also have rather remarkable names in various languages. And in fact it's my favourite french word, but it's less varied than butterflies. For some reason butterflies grabbed people's imaginations to the extent that almost every language has a unique name for it while the language families have more common variations for dragonflies.

    Dragonfly - English
    Naaldekoker - Afrikaans
Libelulle - French ... I think German, Italian and so forth all have variations of this word.

    This is a wonderful thread
As with Churches and birds, they all have names
How nice if we could do the same with the beautiful Butterfly

    Sorry Dudley.
I struggle enough with birds that I'm not even going to try with butterflies (or dragonflies).
If somebody else wants to help out that would be cool though.

The Sotho word for a butterfly: Serurubele. One can almost hear the fluttering sound in the name.

In brief, Mari van Kampen was fellow-forumite Anton van Kampen's daughter, who recently passed away much too early despite a courageous battle against Leukemia, at the tender age of 15.
