Default Hawkeye / Land Rover diagnostic in Cape Town

    Hello!

I'm relatively new to the forum (been reading for a long time, but this is my first post!) and wanted to see if anyone in Cape Town has a Discovery 2 hawkeye I could borrow in exchange for some cold ones please?

I bought a Disco 2 V8 (first problem...) a few years ago on a thin budget (2nd problem...) and have loved it (3rd problem...). It's taken me all over Southern Africa - and back! For the first time it's recently decided to stage its own light show with the three amigos. I know I needed to replace a rear wheel bearing, so wasn't surprised when the lights came on after leaving the bearing replacement for too long. I've now replaced the bearing, though, and the amigos are still there. I've tried the battery-disconnect reset and have cleared codes with a cheap OBDII reader, but the lights are still showing.

For those interested, the error code showing is P1590. From a bit of reading, I decided to test all the ABS sensors for resistance, and they're all in the recommended range, so I don't think those have failed. I reset the code and it's come back as 'pending', but the amigos are all showing and have never 'reset' (they've never stopped showing on the dash).

Anyone got some genuine advice? Or perhaps, someone in Cape Town with a better diagnostic tool I could borrow? Chasing my tail on a very general fault doesn't sound fun and I'm hoping to go away next week for a small holiday, so I'd rather not travel without ABS if I can chase it down.

    Cheers!

Howzit,I have a D2 TD5, also on a budget. Also tackled the 3 amigos more than once. The (very) cheap code readers are actually only reading the ECU (engine control unit) but there multiple controllers on the car so that code you are getting is related to the engine sensors. In this case, you want to the SLS module (ABS and Suspension module). Only more advanced readers can speak to these other modules. The cheapest way is to get a code reader (as you already know). I have a Delphi DS150 code reader clone that does the job (although it swops left and right sensors in its reporting but easy to work around). Has easily paid for itself in saved time and frustration. The wheel speed sensors can have the correct resistance but still be faulty. The way I confirmed this was connecting it up to an oscilloscope: it is meant to generate about a 2v sine wave but was making a triangle waveform. This was a new yet faulty sensor.Second (very common) issue was the ground circuit fault on the PCB of the ABS module. I brought the repair kit, cheap and easy to install just a bit awkward. I think it would be easy enough to repair without the kit. Error code from the code reader pointed me directly to this.Good luck!

Very useful - I'll probably bite the bullet and can hopefully chase it down. Thank you Kevin!

Just an update to anyone who finds this. I went on the trip with the Amigoes in tow, and no hassles. I would've definitely benefited from the traction control in one tough 4x4 section, but other than that it didn't affect the trip!

I took it to 7Landies when I got back, who cleared the codes. They mentioned that the error code was for stuck ABS shuttle valves, but once it was cleared they took it for a 'play' on some gravel and everything's working well again and our friends have moved on. So thankfully no hassles with ABS sensors etc. I'm not sure if the changing of the wheel bearing had anything to do with creating the error in the first place, but good to have it all back and working!
