The drivers are free to pick their own numbers. Often it is a carry-over from their days in the lower formula's.

However, nowadays when going into a new season as the previous season's WDC - the #1 is reserved and the reigning World Drivers Champion can then use it if he wants to. Like Max has done. He ditched #33 for #1.

In the more distant past, the year's WDC would automatically get #1 the next season and his teammate #2. The driver that came second in the WDC would get #3 and his teammate #4 and so on.

I am going on raw memory - please help me if I am wrong.

    Hello Jaco

Almost correct. The world champion and his teammate would get number 1 and 2 respectively, but from numbers three and down, it was allocated according to the team's position in the constructor's championship from the previous year. Interesting to note was that the number 13 was skipped.

This rule was scrapped in 2014, from then on drivers were free to pick their own numbers.

Interesting to note is also that Nigel Mansell won the driver's championship in 1992, but then went on to compete in Indycars in 1993. Williams, as the winning constructor for 1992, therefore were assigned the numbers 0 and 2, leaving Damon Hill to race under the number 0 for 1993 and Prost with number 2.

The same thing happened at the end of 1993, Prost won the championship but then retired, leaving Hill to once again compete under the number 0 in 1994

Edited to add: If this rule would still have been in place today, we would have had the same situation in 2017, after Rosberg won the championship in 2016 and then immediately retired. Mercedes would then have been 0 and 2 for 2017.

Max must be driver of the day. What a race!

    Norris pushed him close.

That Max defence was just sublime.

The presence of mind to let Norris close up before defending, to eke out a bit more life out of his tyres, sheer brilliance.

Got a bit drowsy there in the middle, fortunately I forced myself to get up to go make a cup of coffee, lekker fight in the end, Lando must have wished for 5 more laps, but great work by Max, in his own words he had to work hard for this one.

    Excellent race.

Good to see a race with real drivers that wasn't dominated by the best cars phenomena.

Quite a level playing field all round.

    Default 1 - 2024

Missed this afternoon and watched the 11 minute highlights now, seems like it got close in the end, will watch the second half in full later on.

Anyone see the 2x incidents in the pits in F2 race? Wheels came off cars as they left their pit boxes, no injuries luckily but could have been serious!

Commentators said at the start that Imola has 100% Safety Car incident rate, and my mind immediately went, "well that claim just went and cursed it"

    Safety Car never appeared.

I don't think there was even a single yellow flag the whole race, or did I miss something? Perez and Hamilton through the Gravel, Leclerc running over the grass, but nothing else...

And I always thought Williams were toxic at the time; to have two champions walk away was not very normal.

Yeah, it seems as if Frank Williams and Patrick Head, although I respect both gentlemen immensely for what they have achieved, were not the easiest of people to work for or with. That's also why Adrian Newey left Williams in 1996 as his relationship with both Frank and Patrick had gone sour. Although they would probably never have admitted it, I hope and suspect it is something that Frank and Patrick regretted for years afterwards, as we all know that Williams' downhill slide began right after Adrian left and they never recovered from it.

My limited recollection is that Adrian was promised a partnership, but then Frank and Patrick renegaded.

There seem to be a very good vibe between Max, Lando, Lec, Carlos & George.

Will it last - I doubt it. Wait for the fireworks.

But these youngsters have brought a breath of fresh air into F1. I enjoy the banter, the pranks & laughs.

Looking at the poduim yesterday with Lando, Max & Lec - I could not help thinking that this will be the picture of dominance in F1 for some time to come. The 3 Kings methinks. Anybody who wants to become a WDC the next couple of seasons will have to get past these 3 first - take note Lewis.

As for Max, I have toned down my singing his praises on this thread because I know it must be a PITA - but he can always dig deeper and find more speed when he needs it. I say again - we have not yet seen the best of him. He is improving race by race. Staggering.
