Default T4A - Garmin Zümo XT

    Hi folks,

a T4A-/Garmin related issue: I own a Garmin Zümo XT since yesterday and it took me some time to import a T4A-map (Namibia 230901), finally got it ok. But now (after spending another day with this) I don't understand to follow a via Basecamp planned route (i.e. Vioolsdrift to Ai-Ais) on the Zümo XT...

Using my old Garmin GPSmap64st is no problem at all... so shouldn't that work on the Zümo XT as well? At least I expected that...

There are a lot of support documents here: https://support.garmin.com/en-ZA/?pr...804&tab=topics ... but maybe someone has a short & quick answer to this problem (i.e. like "the Zümo XT is not able to follow a T4A-Basecamp planned route/track and that's it").

I think Garmin is moving away from BaseCamp. Okay, not "I think", they have already mentioned that BaseCamp won't get any more updates. Their newest units only seems to work with their new Garmin Explore web based app. I have found this on page 69 of your user manual and it looks like you must/can export your BaseCamp data to Garmin Explore. From there you should be able to transfer planned routes to your unit.

PS. My old units are not compatible with Garmin Explore and I have therefore not started olaying around with it. I am planning on replacing my old eTrex 20 with a new one. I will see if it will still be BaseCamp compatible or not.

    Hello,

thanks a lot for your advice... very helpful, indeed.

But doesn't that mean, that you cannot use your T4A-maps anymore (at least directly)? Because Garmin Explore uses no other maps than the Garmin ones (and those are nowhere near to the T4A's).

Or: The only way then using the T4A-maps and transferring the routes/tracks planned with T4A is: Installing T4A maps -> Basecamp, then -> planning the route/track in Basecamp -> then -> export routes/tracks to a gpx-file -> then import gpx-file in Garmin Explore / explore.garmin.com...

But, then: I could use the this Basecamp gpx-export to import the data in any application (i.e. my rugged phone) using OSMAnd... result: no Zümo (or any other Garmin hardware) needed & bye bye Garmin Explore! <unfortunately I use Garmin's inReach Mini, so I'm still dependent on Garmin's services; but otherwise I would stay away from Garmin).

The newer eTrex units are compatible with BaseCamp. I do not use Garmin Explore.

I have not tried it on one of the new units, but even on our 276cx I rarely bother with importing routes from Basecamp. I plan routes in basecamp, but then instead of importing, I just select the destination on the 276cx and "go to". If the routing doesn't match my expectations, I add in a couple of manual via points, and that's it. This works well for us because we often adjust our plans and I don't want to go back to the laptop and get the special cable and all that rigamarole.

It is such a shame, and perplexing, that Garmin is taking one of the few things that sets it apart from everyone's smartphones, that a Garmin doesn't need internet, and then removing that feature.

If you have a t4A issue, go to their office and ask for help They are very nice, approachable people and their main office is in Stellenbosch.

Thanks, but I know; but, after all, I have an issue with Garmin not with the T4A-maps themselves...

    Flood,
    - how did you install t4a on your Zumo ?
    - did you remember to activate only the t4a maps ?
    - can you create, on the device, a simple route and activate it ? (say your current location to 2 other points)
    - do you have an original Garmin usb cable ? (a non Garmin cable probably won't work)

You defn can create WayPoints, Routes & Tracks in BaseCamp, Export as Gpx & use on the device.

I don't have a Zumo XT but understand that you
    - Plan the Trip in BaseCamp
    - Export the WayPoints, Routes & Tracks as Gpx files
    - Connect the Cable to your computer (I think this needs to be Windows) & Device
    - It might take a moment for your computer to recognise the device as a drive
    - Copy the Exported Gpx file to the Gpx Folder on the Device (Use a simple no fancy chars or spaces just to be sure)
    - Fire up the device and look for the option to import Routes.
    - The Route should now be listed under Trips

Garmin announced way back (as Danie mentioned) that support for BaseCamp will be scaled down, even so, they released an update in March 2023.

Cool Re: T4A - Garmin Zümo XT

    Hello,

first of all: thanks for the advice...

regarding installing the T4A-maps: I put the sd-card from my GPSmap64st with the maps (working there flawlessly) into the Zümo...

(it's a bit complicated: I got the original package with Zümo & cables, but with the original cable there was no connection between Zümo and Garmin Express and Garmin Basecamp at all. Several attempts, to no avail. But with the cable of the GPSmap 64st it did work...)

But, during booting the Zümo a message shows up: maps not activated. But in the settings they are activated. All maps are activated, though.

I can create a simple route, of course - but only if using the pre-installed maps, not the added T4A-maps (located at the SD-card).

And, then, as I mentioned: At the moment it's more convenient to export Basecamp-based routes & tracks as gpx-file and import them in OSMAnd in my CAT S60 (very) rugged phone... I guess, it was my stupid mistake to buy a new fancy device instead of relying on the old, reliable one. You know the age-old saying: never change a running system...
