Default Tourists killed in Uganda park attack

Ugandan police are pursuing Allied Defence Force (ADF) militants who are suspected to have shot dead two tourists and a guide at the Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The three – a British citizen, a South African and a Ugandan guide – were killed in an attack on Tuesday evening while travelling in a tour vehicle, the Ugandan Wildlife Authority said.

The national park borders Lake Edward in the west, which separates Uganda from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the Islamic State-linked ADF militants are based.

“Our joint forces responded immediately upon receiving the information of the attack and are aggressively pursuing the suspected ADF rebels. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” the police said.

I've been to the DRC on several occasions. I really dislike that place. Very pretty, the jungle, and I've spent quite some time in the jungle there, but the people, when they see a white person, just either sees $$$ or someone that "wronged" them. That being said, where we work, it's never in "nice" places, so these kind's of interactions are common.

We once had a very disfigured woman approach our vehicle, started lobbing hand-sized rocks at us, for no reason, other than we are "different" and would potentially give them stuff. Police just standing there, observing, waiting for us to do something back. We just drove off as fast as possible while getting pummeled by rocks. That RAV4 was never the same again...

There's a book, "King Leopold's Ghost" outlining what the Belgiums did there, which I think explains why the locals are the way they are towards "white people".

Uganda is very nice actually, but also, I don't understand why you'd go vacationing there in this day & age.

Old friend of mine is in Uganda, very involved in conservation there. Hold concessions for many of their game reserves. This report scares the hell out of me.

From what I can gather, the attack was in the Inshasa sector in the south of the park which has been a hotspot area since the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Hodge podge of militias operating across the border, Interahamwe, Islamic State affiliates, etc etc.
There have been several attacks in the area, and last time I was there, there were constant military patrols and a firefight near our camp one night.

Ugandan army announces elimination of rebels that murdered newly-wed tourists in mid-October

Uganda's military killed some of the Daesh-linked* Allied Democratic Forces members who ambushed a couple of South-African-British newlyweds and their guide in Queen Elizabeth National Park near the border with DRC on October 17.

"ADF terrorists whom we have been tracking down since the attack on tourists were finally got and a number of them were killed last night on Lake Edward," Ugandan military deputy spokesman Deo Akiiki said.

The military added that the operation is still on since not all the rebels have been eliminated.

The Ugandan government are quite brutal in their response to anything that puts the government in a bad light and the truth is not something they strive for. I really hope that they have caught the real perpetrators and not some sacrificial lambs. Fortunately my trip to Uganda is only in 2025 so we should know by then whether the Queen Elizabeth park is a safe destination or not.
