Aftermarket shocks rub on CV Axle
Good day
I have a 2021 Toyota Hilux 2.8 4x4.
I got aftermarket shocks a while back with a 2.25 inch shock body. Recently, after I got slightly bigger tyres (265/70/17 Falken Wildpeak AT3WA) my shocks are now rubbing on my CV axles at both sides (not saying it is tyre related but coincidentally it seems like it started thereafter). They do not touch while the bakkie is on a flat surface with wheels locked to either side or in a straight line. Seems like they will touch with body roll but it is difficult to verify.
The suspension guys say that they have always checked in the past during maintenance and it never touched or rubbed (they regreased the shock bushes just before I put the tyres on - like a day or two before). I've had the shocks for quite a while (40000 km) and the tyres only for around 6000 km.
I am still using my OEM springs and they are pre-loaded to give approximately 2 inch lift (they have 60000km on)
I have heard proposals to relocated the shock mounting or install an anti-rollbar spacer.
I do not feel when they touch on my steering (or I am just used to it.)
I have 3mm steel bash plates (only additional weight in the front)
I've been to a few tyre shops to verify causes. Some tried to bs me into replacing my entire lower control arm while the other said it is not related to alignment. I unfortunately do no know enough about IFS reaction to road surface to validate this and I am struggling to visualise how the suspension would move to cause this rubbing
What could cause this? and how do I fix it?
Pictures 1-3 were when the bakkies was hanging freely while wheels were rotated and picture 4 was normal. I drew lines over the rubbing part to try to ascertain when the rubbing occurs but I will have to redo the experiment as I did various types of driving.
