Folks,
Just came off a nine week trip through Botswana and Namibia finishing up in CapeTown. This forum was an absolute top gold resource of help and advice in planning the trip so I could do it with confidence.
I am now looking to either import a Land Cruiser Troop carrier from Australia where I live, or buy and fit out a Land Cruiser in SA, so here go more questions, hopefully soon I will be in a position to help others.
# Can you point me to info on where I could store my vehicle between trips? Need locations in SA/Bots/Namibia
# Have any non resident and non citizen members bought a vehicle in SA? How difficult is this?
# Who are the insurance companies you use? Proper coverage for 4WD and off-road use.
# Anyone shipped a vehicle from Australia to SA post covid and can you let me know approx costs?
Very Many Thanks

1. Bobo Campers offers long term storage in Cape Town, Jo'berg, Windhoek. KGS Sand and Stone/aka Hunters Home in Windhoek. Maybe the Transkalahari Inn, though I have no personal experience with them. There are other storage areas too, google and email and you'll find something. If you can't find something, or you know specifically what you're looking for PM me and I can dig through my notes more.
2. Yes. Depends. In SA you need to either start a business (doesn't have to do anything) and register in the business's name OR get a TRN. Most go the TRN route, and it can be difficult to get on a tourist visa, though it is legal. Join the OverlandAfrica Facebook group (the one with the red sunset picture, not the white bakkie picture w/ the same name) and search for #TRN and there are resources/info on how to get a TRN. I haven't done it, but I gather it is easier to buy a car as a foreinger in Namibia, and easier still in Botswana.
3. We use TuffStuff. Most SA insurance companies don't offer real 4x4/offroad insurance, and of the few that do most companies do not want to insure foreigners. We told Tuffstuff that we aren't from SA and have insurance through them (you need a non-resident bank account from FNB), but other people have been told they can't insure foreingers. I suspect this is just getting the wrong staff on the phone, but who knows, maybe I'm paying money for nothing.
4. no idea.
