Default Isle of Man TT 2023

The 2023 TT started yesterday with the first practice day for all classes.
My nephew Allann Jon Venter is the only South Africa racing on the Mountain Course this year. He's riding a BMW1000RR that has been built here by Lekka Racing and Sandton BMW Motorad in the Superbike and Superstock classes. He managed to get a ride with one of the top teams, Wilson Craig Racing, for the Supersport 600 class. I'm told that Michael Dunlop assisted in negotiating this deal.
Due to problems with BA, some of AJ's kit, including his leathers and helmet, didn't arrive before the first practice. Michael Dunlop kindly lent AJ a spare set of leathers and helmet for him to use until his kit arrives on the island.
If you are on Facebook, you can follow his progress through the practice week and then the racing.

I still dont understand how these guys manage to fit their balls into their race suits. Big solid brass ones need to tackle that course.

    Good luck to AJ

I love this race, went in 2019 and I rode the circuit at a slowish pace. At speed it must be scary as hell and yip big steel balls are standard.

Actually going through the process to see if I can go next year .... if it's too expensive, this will be right at the top of my to do list once we've move the the EU ... I'm addicted to this race - to the OP, they spoke to your nephew on 102.7 couple weeks back, cool story, good luck to him.

AJ's kit arrived, so he's in the correct leathers today. The Supersport and Super Twins practice was canceled due to oil on the circuit. Click image for larger version.

    Awesome!! Good luck to him...

On a side note Michael Dunlop is seen as a "a$$h...."..in his own words he has pissed off more manufacturers / teams than he can count

Great to see how supportive he actually is. These guys form part of a brotherhood that a very select few can join...

I've now met Michael a few times through AJ and seen how he operates at the circuit where he was here. He's down to earth and happy to chat with and give time to fans. With the manufacturers and bikes he gets on, he is very single-minded. He tells them what he wants from a bike or he walks away. He's done that with tyre suppliers as well when they didn't supply what he needed at the one TT. I don't blame him for being that way as it is his body that is on the line if something goes wrong. There is no such thing as a small accident in Road Racing with the speeds they do on public roads. Look how many top guys are out because of accidents at the North West 200, like Lee Johnston. Gary Johnson is in hospital in the Czech Republic from a crash at a race there. If they have doubts or worries about a bike, they would be stupid to put a leg over it. I agree 100%. He is one of few that is willing to walk away from sponsors / teams if they don't come to the party. Knowing his and his families history one can understand that he is not arrogant, just looking after himself as best he could.

On a side note he is looking wicked fast in the practice sessions thus far. He might be able to challenge the big guns on the big bikes this year (Hickman / Harrison) if they can get the bikes perfectly set up for him

AJ finished both the 600 Supersport and Superbike races within the required time to qualify for a Bronze TT trophy.
In the Superbike race, he managed his fastest lap around the Island Course with a 125.191 mph lap! Well done, Allann-Jon Venter.
