Default Cape Vidal , the lost and wasted paradise

The world renowned conservationist, the late Dr Ian Player, was once asked where he would want to spend his last day on earth and he said "Cape Vidal , nowhere else?"
Well Dr Player would turn around in his grave if he were to see what is going on at Cape Vidal.
I am emotionally very attached to this place , have been camping there since 1980's, my wife grew up there , we got engaged on the beach halfway to Levin point.

I just came back from camping at Vidal. This camp is falling apart, luckily the controlling authority (rather say non controlling) cannot bugger up the sea and beach, but the rest they have already done.

Vidal is dirty, soiled, grubby, grimy, filthy, messy , polluted "die plek is sif"
The ablutions at least get swept, but no cleaning is done, soap scum in showers , old black skid marks in toilet bowls, shower doors are slimy.
Litter strewn all over by monkeys, hyena's and bushpigs is not picked up or removed, not only in the camp but on the beach and day visitors area. I saw the vehicle collecting rubbish drive right pass the turned over bins, they only collected the rubbish that was inside the bins. Staff sit around doing absolute nothing, staring into the oblivion! They have a walking pace slower than a sloth. Imagine sitting around and trying to do "so min as moontlik die hele dag"?

I can't comment on the chalets, never stayed there in my life , but reviews of the chalets are poor.

It is also nearly impossible to get hold of Vidal camp to book,
Booking should be done by central reservations not Vidal camp

This is a world heritage site! I am ashamed that foreign tourists have to endure this.

Isimangiliso wetland authority and KZN wildlife just don't care a damn.
Clean makes clean, a scrubbing brush, screw driver , hammer and nails can do wonders .

The walking path to the 2 x beautiful whale watching platforms has not being maintained or cleared from bush encroaching for months

Yes , brown brown water, not fit for human consumption.
Its a camp with no shortage of water, it always came from Banghasi lake and filtered.
    Now no more filters.

    Very sad!

Did you email this to KZN wildlife / SANParks? Post it on Socials and send it to the outdoor magazines as well. I'm happy to share this for you.

As an example, It took about a year of us pestering Khama non-stop and they're finally coming around. First ablution redone, other's to follow (will keep pestering them 'till the others are also done). SANParks is finally coming around at Kruger as well it seems.

    Cheers,

I has the same experience this past December. No water. Electricity issues. Pools dirty. Bathrooms horrific due to no water.

Unfortunately two days in we packed up and left. Got my family excited beforehand due to the wonderful past memories I had there only to have egg on my face due.

Sadly I will never return. Plus side is that the beach is still as pristine as I recalled.

Cape vidal was our annual holiday spot fron late 60-70s. There were almost no facilities and no official camping spots. Sandy road in and always got stuck. Caught huge fish. Only later in the 70s did they start the camping spots.

    Piece of paradise then

Ja Swaer, so much for the proclaimed 25th or whatever wonder of the world, heritage site, blah, blah, blah....

Ever since the pine and bluegum trees made way for a game park it has been a disaster. My opinion so please don't take it as a fact but I have spend enough time there in the last 40 odd years to see how it has slipped down the road of no return.

This whole isimagaliso circus are just destroying what used to be paradise. All in the name of money which I still don't know where it is going though. Definitely not to improve and maintain the camps so your guess is as good as mine.

Hi Christoff, unfortunately is not a SANPARKS park, wish it was!
They will never allowed this degradation of this prime camping spot.
Really , I love Cape Vidal, its the best spot at the ocean in SA x far
Isimangiliso and KZN wildlife must disban, and all their staff restrenched and replaced by SANPARKS
The camp is disgusting , especially the ablutions
There are washaways on the newly built road from maingate, but NOTHING is been done to repair it.
The marine officers at Vidal sits and watch monkeys , attack women on the beach, raiding, stealing etc. but they sit around on the fat arrses and do not chase them or even pick up the litter in front of them, their moral must be at the lowest it can be.Useless bunch of individuals
Isimangiliso even charge you a fee to launch your boat, dammit man they do nothing towards coatsal conservation or clean up.
Coming through the gate the staff wear old stained t shirts with tattered jeans
Sorry but the whole Vali Moosa idea with Zaloumis is ending in a complete disaster
Maintenance at eastern shores is non existent, reason is there are 2 x entities and no one takes responsibility.

    Pse. go and enjoy
The bay is very deep , not sanded up at all, snorkling current the best its ever been because of the depth around the rocks, 2-3 mt deep.
Go for walks north and south.,
Go for late afternoon game drives, maybe you spot the resident leopard near the resrvoir, and the new born white rhino calf.
Vidal is great albeit the filthy camp site.

To add to your sad news, the staff there don't even care if you write this in the national paper!
The top bra was and is implicated in millions of theft from the park, its sadly is just a ANC connected drain as must as you can place!

There must be 100’s op people employed, but very little working, its simply a place to collect a salary!

Not news really, what else in our country is different, and when is enough enough?

Vidal and Mapelane were the jewels of the Zululand coast. Now you cannot even risk traveling the Mapelane road due to influx of squatters into the reserve and this is very sad news about Vidal which I can also remember as a paradise when the camp was still ruin by Forestry in the 1960's.

Sad business and I was one who supported KZN Wildlife / Natal Parks Board staying independent of National Parks; turned out to be a mistake although maybe only a respite.

SA won't get rid of the corrupt ANC cockroaches, staying here we can't escape Afrika unless we escape. In most of the media (and even on this forum) the major opposition to the ANC is mostly rubbished, pretty much guaranteeing nothing will change.

The decline you see in parks in KZN is mostly a result of the failing government. KZN Wildlife is a parastatle and reliant on government funding. Income from tourism isn't nearly enough to cover management costs. They simply do not have a cash cow like Kruger to keep afloat. And thus, unfortunately, most reserves and tourism camps receive a pittance of what they need to be managed properly. Funding for maintenance of infrastructure is simply non existant.

Remember, conservation will always stand last in the queue when government is handing out money.

There are some bad apples amongst the staff with bad attitudes, but the majority of the Ezemvelo work force are still a committed bunch. They simply aren't given the tools to do what they need to do anymore.

It is just the way the new sa is going, in every sector
