    Default MTN 3G sucks?

Why is it that whilst browsing the forum on my Nokia E90, that the 3G connection keeps dropping. I get to the bottom of the page and want to post a reply or go to a new thread and the "connecting to mtn" comes up. Sometimes I have to exit and come back in again. It drives me to drink!

I have updated the base software on my phone, twice. Nooit, it has dropped again while typing this!

Anybody else challenged with this, is it just the towers where I live?

I also use mtn 3g experiencing the same periodically. If browsing on your phone try mobile option, http://mobile.4x4community.com, to return to normal http://normal.4x4community.com.

I have experienced "drops" from the office server too, seems as if teh page times out, maybe i type too slow...........but that is OK, because some people on teh Forum can only read slowly.

THE 3G connection is normally very fast in most places i go, can be very expensive though - recently in Kenya i was billed R89.90 per MB / conenction. This is still ok but then was billed almost R700 for 9 minutes on the internet.
One of our guys ended up with a R10k bill after 10 days in Kenya. We queried with MTN and they are of the opinion it is normal (3rd party roaming), so if visiting Kenya and i guess most of africa other than Mozambique, Botswana and Namibia (from my experience) BE AFRAID of using the MTN 3G.

Randy a collegue went to Europe for a conference. He checked the roaming fees before going over - very similar to the rates you are quoting. It is NOT an "africa" thing but with roaming outside our borders .....

More expensive is understandable, but this is seriously OTT. The most expensive calls in Europe are from Italy and that is about R30 / minute.

At "peak times" (late afternoon / early evening) my connection drops at least 5 or 6 times whilst I trying to download the day's email. If it doesn't drop it slows down to about -5g. I'm using MTN's latest 3g modem.
You need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape.
If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40.
If it moves and shouldn't, use duct tape.

"Voice" is supposed to have priority over "Data" ...... I'm experiencing your problems with normal calls !

    Hi There...

This is exactly the opposite of what I can report...
I am using MTN 3g using my Omnia as a modem to connect my laptop to the net. The connection is very stable, fast and easy to use...

A friend of mine actually recently moved his data connection from Vodacom to MTN because they are into online gaming and apparently the ping speeds on MTN is much better than any other network...

Also... MTN is now spending a lot of money on new infrastructure which is going to bring down the cost of internet a lot and up the speed even more...

It must have something to do with the area you are in...

I cannot comment regarding pricing outside SA. I only use it locally.

    Cheers

Voice and data do not use the same channels on a base station, effectively there are 6 dedicated channels for voice and 2 for sms's and data, now the amount of these stations within a base station would depend on the tower itself whether it be omni-directional or tri sector, with the tri sector being found in high usage areas.

I think wer are all in the same boat here. i have 2 3g contracts and the one comes to its term with vodacom in 2 months time. Tried to cancell it at the end of its term and was told i can only do it on a certain date. I told the lady that i would be out of the country on that date. After a long discussion they said they would fax it off for me. I have a cell phone contract with mtn and connect via my comp no problem. I think it is like the banks some like absa and some fnb or standard.

Ideal would be dual network phones like they have in Mozambique for example. 2 sim card slots, you can select / switch between 2 service providers with ease.

Anybody ever tried a dual handset in SA?

Dual network phones are not ICASA approved thus no one sells them here in SA (or legally for that matter). Had a client buy one in Dubai and he says it works like a charm, seeing that he spends a lot of his time in Moz.

Dropped data and voice calls seems to be the norm.

Last month I remembered they had 2 articles on this on www.myadsl.co.za

    Dropped Call? Get Free airtime.

Which Cellphone Provider has the most dropped calls.

At the bottom of each article is a link to read all the forum comments.
