Default 15" / 16" Rims for Wrangler Unlimited?

Has anybody found suitable 15" or 16" rims yet for a Wrangler Unlimited? The price of the 17" tyres scares the living daylights out of me!

I see in 2004 they launched the Wrangler Extreme Sport with 15" rims, any chance that those will fit?

What is the rim specs I need to look out for?

Are there any other implications in changing down from the 17"? (Other than a huge cost saving in tyre replacements!)

    Default Just out of curiosity?

Hi, I was just wondering what is the price difference between the sizes you mention above? And does brand play a big difference?

Brand does not make a difference.
Problem with 17" is price and also availability, there are very few choices. For example in the Maxxis ranges the only choice is Bighorns, one size, one model.

Price for a 17" tyre with semi offroad use is over R2700.00, similar tyre in 15" just over R1000!

    Dirk,

Nie seker wat julle band grootes vir die 17" rims is nie - het gesien Maxxis het 265/65/17 Bighorns (ingebring vir Navara) op special vir 1650 per band. Sommige plekke verkoop ook nou D694's vir 1900 per band. (Selfde bande was 'n jaar terug 2450 per band.) Lyk of dit nou 'n goeie tyd is om 17's te koop as mens kan.

2004 would be a TJ. Different PCD to the JK.

    Will 15's clear the brakes?

Seems you just need o get the Backspacing right, but you still may have to grind the calipre setup down a tad.

    33x15

They say some fit, some dont.

Some 15" rims do fit, but they are not the norm. Most tend to rub the callipers. The steel 15's seem to be the best option as they have a thinner wall than the alloys.

But, even if they do fit the clearance is very tight.

The PCD on a TJ is 5 on 4.5, where as the PCD on your JK is 5 on 5. There is an adaptor available to change from the 5/5 down to a 5/4.5.

Other than the price there are no pitfalls dropping down to a 16" rim, just more rubber.

    Default m2cw

    Hi Dirk,

    Just my 2cw.

I changed from the 17's to the 16's, softer ride and better off-road "Performance" Less side wall punctures ect... I tried the 15's(Alloy) on the jeep as i originally wanted to go with 31's, however they did not fit over the front caliper. I dont think the wrangler and Cherokee is the same but some input might help. Price wise i still think going 15's will be the best as the 16's and 17's are more expensive than the 15's. Good luck and remember to post pictures....
I like anything with 4 or more wheels...

    Hi Dirk

Also looking for a set of 16x8 rims for a Jeep JK Rubicon. Best price so far was R1150 plus VAT for the Cragar Black Rock steel rim from US Parts in Cape Town.

They import almost all the rims sold on the Quadratec wesite.
