Which patrol engine was known as the grenade though? Was it this TD42 or was it the 3.0 model?

I would be very nervous of a tuned patrol…

I do honestly believe that in almost every way the patrol is a better workhorse bakkie than the cruiser.

Only the first models afaik. Nissan fixed the issue.
In the interest of transparency, I must disclose that my real name is Anakin Skywalker. I hail from the planet Tatooine. When I am not piloting my Imperial Class Destroyer, a magnificent vessel that perfectly complements my malignant narcissism, I drive a Nissan Patrol, a Japanese automobile from Planet Earth that certainly grounds me in many, many ways.

    This is the 4.2 TDi.
Free flow, and some stage 2 conversion thing.
And believe me.......if you've felt this, anything else sort of becomes very medium to rare.
    WOW
AND the ride is - well - Patrol like. Great handling, soft suspension, spacious, ALL is well.
Pulls like a train, sounds like a truck, drives and handles like an Amarok.
I should'nt have driven the damn thing, now I also want one.

The Direct Injection ZD30 was known as the grenade. AFAIK grenading happened at high kilometres, and
was statistically not _that_ common. Issue fixed by 2004-ish.

2007 saw the release of the CRD ZD30 - which does not have the grenading issue.

Here is a link to an example of NADS (Nissan Anti Detonation System ) developed in response to the
    grenading situation:

The 4.2 is known as the kettle.
It is a very strong and robust engine, and has been sucessfully tuned to over 1000Nm of torque.
It has dual oil filters and a gear-driven camshaft and as a result requires almost no maintenance apart from the regular oil and filter changes and tappet adjustment.

But the cooling system is iffy, and you need to drive it within the temperature limits...
Beat-up rat rod of a '96 Nissan Patrol that bears the evidence of many wonderful adventures (and a few stupid indiscretions).

To this day I will argue that only two Japanese vehicles worked properly (and still doing so) in conflict countries like Afghanistan and Iraq. Cruiser and Patrol. B6 armouring added for protection. Literally bullet proof on all accounts. The US tried hard with their Chevvies, but it never had the same tenacity and longevity.

And when modified EGT goes like a rev counter. Very tough engines but should be left standard as the 1HZ.
In pre chamber indirect diesel engines it is very difficult to keep EGT in the limits with performance tunes. All my friends with modified 4.2 Patrols drive with eyes glued to EGT gauges.

Pity Nissan stop making the Y61 SC Patrol bakkies.

In my geval klim my Zd30’s met direct injection effens vinniger as my indirect precombustion chamber diesels.
