True, but if many people are paying half of what you're paying, perhaps that means that person needs to have a long chat with their broker or move their business elsewhere, or even figure out why their risk profile is so much worse and how to fix the situation.

1. Age of owner and regular driver.
2. Claims history last 3 to 5 years.
3. Use of the vehicle (private/Business)
4. Area of usage.
5. Overnight parking.
6. Daytime parking.
7. Year of manufacture of vehicle
8. Value of the vehicle.
9. Do you transport goods with the vehicle (attractive goods for hijacking)
10. Colour of the vehicle etc
11. Extra's fitted to the vehicle.
12. Performance enhancements made.

I doubt. Risk profiles are not just thumb sucked. Actuaries and very clever math people are usually involved in building risk profile models. I would be very, very surprised if risk profiles for the same person differs much between the major insurance companies.

In fact I would be extremely wary of any insurance company which offers a very low premium on high risk vehicles like Hilux's compared to other insurers. They offer the low premium to hook you as a customer and next year hit you with an 500% increase in premium. Been there, done that.

There are many factors playing a role when a premium is calculated for a vehicle

To name a few

Age of driver, gender, usage, area where the vehicle will be used, drivers claims and insurance history, cover type, extras on the vehicle, added benefits like car rental, tyre cover, credit shortfall, is the vehicle insured on it its own or with other items, day and overnight parking, security devices, excesses payable, is the vehicles performance enhanced, type of policy it is placed on, register owner? and the list goes on

Following the commentary above about how premiums are calculated, it is a funny business.

The Corolla Cross on my profile was bought this week, the same insurance company which covers four cars for me, including the Fortuner, quoted me a premium of 2.5x more than the Fortuner. I eventually placed the Cross with Discovery at a premium slightly more than the Fortuner. I did the exercise of what if I move the Fortuner to Discovery … Discovery was double what I am paying now. 🤷

So same insured individual profile, same location etc etc. I am now paying more for a vehicle of less value. Is the vehicle/Corolla cross then deemed to be the “risk” ? More risky than the Fortuner ?

Discovery R711 which includes Retail Booster, Write Off Accelerator and 30days car hire. I'm on the purple plan.

I've been with Discovery about 10 years now. I get back on ave R650 a month for good driving.

My broker does a comparison annually and the other companies can't beat Discovery but they come in with similar figures..... but one has to factor in the almost R2000 monthly rewards we get for 4 vehicles.
