    Default Finding Caracals/Rooikat

Hi everyone. I have a client looking for footage of caracals, but they are tricky animals to film. I've tried in the Kgalagadi before with very little success (although it was very hot when we were there and I think we may have better luck if we can stay at Rooiputs and search that area early morning and late afternoon since I have seen quite a few photos of a caracal between Rooiputs and Kij Kij.

Does anyone have suggestions for other locations where caracals can be seen reliably? Or perhaps where there is a semi-tame caracal that has been hand-reared then released?

    Thanks,
    Rob

There was a litter at Kirstenbosch a while ago and I know many people got photos of the kittens/mom. Sure they are still around although might not be nice "in the wild" type of photos. They are quite habituated to people what ive heard.

About 10 km south of Gariep dam wall there was a couple on a farm rehabilitating injured Caracul. I cant remember the name of the farm but they had a hand reared caracul mooching about. Perhaps cold call a few accomadation spots in the area, someone is bound to help you. That area is Caracul HQ.

Thanks. I actually went there when I heard about the kittens but I did not manage to find them, and I think they have moved off now.

No luck getting hold of them. Their number seems to be disconnected.

    Any other suggestions?

They are called Ruigtevallei Lodge now and are under new management. They no longer have the Caracul.

Thanks. Ideal would be quite tame but free-roaming. I could also use rescued animals at sanctuaries - but usually the cages are too small to film without getting fences or other man-made objects in the shot.

In the past I have filmed a caracal in a reserve where they were doing a gradual reintroduction. This was perfect since the cat was free to hunt and roam but was still being fed daily while it became accustomed to living in the wild.

Thanks. My producer is in touch with them. We were hoping they might have a collared caracal but there are none at the moment.

I have seen caracal over the lagoon Stanford side . A couple on the tracks down to the beach around dusk.
    Not tame at all though.

Rob you stay in Hermanus if I remember correctly?

Maybe it's worth a shot to ask the Cape Leopard Trust, they have camera traps all over and may be able to assist with some locations where they pop up often, bit of a long shot though.

There are some around Fisherhaven/Rooisand Nature Reserve.
I have an animal that visits my garden in FH some nights and leaves it`s trademark, attached. Also the odd bird wing or two. So far identified as Genet or Caracal, any experts out there?

Thanks. Yeah, that's probably worth a shot. We would also like to film a caracal release, so perhaps they can help with that.

Interesting. Maybe a bit small for caracal? But I am no expert.
