TRIP REPORT: Chitake, Mana Pools
Thank you to previous trip reports for the info on Chitake. It was very helpful in planning our trip in August 2022.
After 3 long days of travel, we finally arrived in Zimbabwe. The crossing through Beitbridge took us 4 hours – but it all became worth it as soon as we saw our destination.
Mana Pools had been on our bucket list for a long time, and after many delays thanks to covid, our group was ecstatic to finally be making our way to this dream destination.
Our first stop was Chitake Springs. Situated in the far south of Mana Pools, Chitake is as remote as you can get. There are only 3 campsites, so you really are all on your own. It’s fantastic! The natural spring is one of the only sources of water, so all animals in the area come to drink here. It’s a harsh environment but you feel completely immersed in the wild when here. Maybe a little bit vulnerable too. It’s also famous for the night sounds. We heard constant lion roars and elephant trumpeting as the lions chased them.
There are very few routes for driving so you just sit and wait for the animals to come. And they did…
We were lucky enough to experience the buffalos in their hundreds coming to drink at the spring. A lioness had earlier killed a buffalo calf and was on her kill when the herd arrived. An unbelievable sighting.
We were a large group of campers and therefore booked Chitake 1 and Chitake 2.
Chitake 1 is the prime campsite and has views over the spring. Chitake 2 is closer to the lion action but doesn’t have a prime view. Both have basic pit latrines.
There isn’t much information on Chitake – and its difficult to get your bearings before you go there. I suggest watching this video that one of the members of our group put together. It clearly shows the outline of the campsites, as well as the famous figtree. The figtree is the perfect spot to sit and wait for the lions to come.

Many people on this forum suggested 2-3 nights at Chitake. We could have stayed a week. If you enjoy relaxation and enjoy watching nature, then I suggest you spend more time in this area.
Chitake feels like you have stepped into the animals playing field – and there is everything to play for. It’s a unique and special place that we will definitely be returning to.
Any queries - please ask away.
