Default Gen 4 Pajero engine cutting off

    Hi,

    Some help please.
What could be the cause of my 3.2DiD engine cutting off when I put it into gear.
The problem is intermittent. It switches off, and then takes a few seconds longer to start.
Been doing it for a few days.

    Thanks.

Start simple, check for dirty diesel, dirty fuel filter or water in the trap.

But I suspect your SCV has sung its last song. Has it been surging under constant throttle at like 110kph?

Common issue at higher mileage, especially after some dodgy diesel. It takes about 15 min to replace. Expensive from the agents but cheaper if you go to Toyota and get the denso part there. Just check the part number on your fuel pump. There are 2 versions depending on if you have a low power or high power pajero (2010 was the switch)

    Hi
Mine was doing the same thing, it literally went dead and as I put it into gear it would die.
Changed the diesel filter and all seems.ok.
Try chnage the filter before anything

    Hi.

I suspected contaminated diesel, and may well be the filter.

No surging. All in order beside the intermittent switching off.

    Thanks for the thoughts.

Yes the fuel filter never gets changed during the 5 years free service that came with the cars , but after 10 years or 100k should be changed , I only changed mine at 94 k after 14 years! but never had an issue , perhaps its what fuel one gets

    Hi,

The cutting off is back after being absent for a few days. Does it a few times, then back to normal. Changing the fuel filter was not the fix.

Any recommendations for a reliable workshop in KZN, Durban area, to assess the SCV?

    Thanks.

Common rail 3.2 have a SCV that can cause issues similar to what you are describing.

common issue on multiple makes and models.

just as a side note, Genuine parts can be bought through Midas. Be sure to get the part number off the old unit, ask the Midas salesman to check the "Parts Incorperated" system for stock.

Same here. Got a Paj Gen 4 LWB 3.2 Did and recently the engine starts once in cold mornings with revs fluctuating. Cuts off by itself after 4 seconds. Then, I need to start it a couple of times (choking) before the engine stays running. But this happens, it practically runs fine the whole day.

    Any advice?

Throw some worth diesel cleaner in. It could be your SCV as decribed that is stuck closed, hence no fuel, and no start. If you have a scanner you can check rail pressure. Try to pump the fuel primer on top of the fuel filter to see if this helps.

SCV is easy to replace, a bit fiddly, around 15 minutes. Expensive part though. Go to Toyota and get the Denso one. High Power and Low Power Gen 4's have different SCV's so keep that in mind.

Agree the Suction Control Valve can get dirt in , you can try cleaning it , but replacement is better

Was in Midas in East London this morning and asked them for a price on a SCV for my Pajero. When the salesman told me thay dont stock any diesel related spares I asked him to check in the Parts Incorporated system which he kindly did but insisted there were no SCVs for any vehicles listed?

I note, however, on the Denso website that Midas is a retailer of their products. Pity Midas cant help cause the price from Mitsubishi is rediculous.
