I swear every third car/truck would arrive to my shop for brake, chassis, or transaxle work and the owner (usually a used car dealer) had no idea where the key was, and this was well before all the fancy tools to remove them had been discovered in ancient Aztec ruins…

Find a 12 point CHROME socket that almost, but not quite fits over locking lug nut, smash it on with a large hammer as far as clearance allows, then use an air or electric impact, repeat as needed…

Funny story about locking lug nuts on a trip… (leave them off or bring the key)

…after a good morning session surfing some tasty waves, came upon some tourist from California who came down to central Mexico (without a jack, or lug wrench, but a spare oddly enough) who had a puncture on the left rear semi-bald crap tire off the two lane leaving the beach, so being a farmer I had plenty of jack and lug wrench, then another neighbor farmer stopped by to see que paso.

Of course we both had more than enough between the two of us to lift it up and in quick order had it well in hand, but come to find out super tourist had locking lug nuts but no key on top of his other nonsense choices and after futzing for :30 minutes with complete failure, asked other farmer for large hammer, then I proceeded to break off offending lug stud (problem solved) swapped out with spare and we left the guy standing there wondering what just happened…

Yes Fluffy, i forgot to say it depends if the workshop manager is worth his salt. Audi Hatfield and BMW Fountains helped us a couple of times with clients cars.

    What vehicle is it for?

Can’t you just pop into the parts department of your local dealer and pick up a replacement?

My problem was with a MB 200 C.
The bolts are in a recess, so welding or that spanner would not work.
    Twist socket was very easy

This is what they used (Twist Socket):
Does anyone have information where a socket like this is available? I'd like to buy one.

I've had a look on the Adendorff website and can't find any on there. I'll check with Kennedy tools on Monday and give feedback here.

General question. Is wheel theft still an issue? Have never had a wheel (Except the spare on a bakkie) stolen in 22 years of vehicle ownership.

In a way I am glad it happened now and not while in the middle of nowhere.
When you say 'round' you forgot to mention that it is actually an outer ring that spins around on the head of the locknut. You first have to tack weld that ring onto the face of the locknut. Then you can use one of those twisted socket (or regular socket that you are willing to sacrifice, that is slightly larger than that ring). Some rims have the bolts recessed so might require another solution...

Jip, the locknut on the Fords is a challenge... jy gaan sommer net 'n socket op kap nie... THIS was my thread on the ordeal with the Ford Ka my daughter had 4 years ago. Supa-Quick welded on nuts to remove - was quite a job... Cost me R400 in 2018.

I have not had this particular challenge but my go to in these situations is a Dremel, small grinder, cold chisel (depending on nut or bolt size) then a hammer and punch (scale to size) to tap it looser.

Mine was not that expensive but still a nasty surprise on a Xmas morning. "They" had removed one palisade bar and used my paving bricks to extract their jack.
