Looks nice, but they really should have chosen a better name...

    ...especially here in SA!

The Concept does look very cool but Keep in mind that the production version won't be the same as the concept.

    Look at these pics

    Default Amarok

I had the opportunity to see the Amarok in Germany at our supplier who is developing parts. It looks stunning and the 2 ltr. common rail engine has a sound and POWER. It comes in Europe in Okt. 09 and here in Feb 2010.
I am looking forward of getting one

VW is coming too late to the party. They will make a few sales but it will not be spectacular. Toyota will just do some minor changes on the Hilux to keep them out in the cold.

What I would like to know is if it'll be a worthy alternative to the 2011 Touareg...? I absolutely LOVE my Treg, but I do sometimes miss the loadbox on my ex-Nissan KingCab.

If it rides/feels like a Treg and has the same off-road capabiliy, I might consider it.

However, this is still the one I want...

VW's Amarok bakkie to debut in Dakar as support vehicle; SA launch next year. Engineering News

German vehicle manufacturer Volkswagen will test the mettle of its new entry into the bakkie market at the Dakar Rally, in Argentina.

The Volkswagen Amarok will be seen at the rally for the first time, where it will the official support vehicle for the sports event.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will supply 35 Amaroks to the Dakar Rally organiser, the Amaury Sport Organisation.

The rally starts on January 1, and ends on January 17 in Buenos Aires, in Argentina.

It covers more than 9 000 km of extreme desert conditions between Argentina and Chile.

Four of the 14 legs of the race will run through the Atacama desert.

There will also be two crossings of the Andes at the altitudes of about 4 700 m above sea level.

Volkswagen Motorsport hopes to make it two in a row after the historic win by South African Giniel de Villiers and his co-driver, Dirk von Zitzewitz, in the debut South American Dakar Rally in 2009.

For 2010, Volkswagen Motorsport has entered five teams, which will be competing in diesel-powered Race Tuareg vehicles.

The German vehicle manufacturer sees the use of the Amarok as a support vehicle as an endurance test.

“The Volkswagen Amarok is Volkswagen’s answer to the pickup and on the Dakar Rally – one of the last great adventures for mankind – it will have the chance to show what it is made of and to demonstrate its flexibility and durability,” says Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles CEO Stephan Schaller.

“Moreover, the Volkswagen Amarok is built in Argentina and South America is one of the most important markets for this product, so taking part in the 2010 Dakar Rally was an absolute must for us.”

The Amarok will first be launched in the South American markets, followed by Europe.

The pick-up's South African market introduction is planned for the third quarter of 2010.
