    Default Mecer 2.4kVA

    Hallo everybody

I need to get my parents out of the dark, i.e. lights only.

What are the opinions of the following "load shed" kit.

There are a hundred other options and a thousand other opinions.

    I will offer one opinion.

    YES.

It is not the best or the optimal.

And somebody may offer an alterative possibly better option, which is fine.

Listen to that if you like.

But otherwise - just do it - it will do the job.

    I have a 720w inverter with a 200ah battery.

For relatively cheap under R10 000 it is a great solution

As fluffy says it will do the job, I was using similar for a short while before I got my kit installed, if you are able to find something with a lithium battery in it thats even better
though that might be very difficult, I had a look on geewiz and I see a lot is sold out.

As you indicated. I kind of prefer a pure sine. Can at least keep a small fridge running in these testing times.

    Personally I would recomend this

    https://www.inverter-warehouse.co.za/collections/solar-inverters/products/zuva-back-up-box

    Or maybe the bigger one

    https://www.inverter-warehouse.co.za...-back-up-box-3

I have the small one and it has worked perfectly for a year, then had to replace the battery, as expected with the amount of outages experienced. Changing the battery is quite simple and easily achieved

Why I would recomend it, is the solar option, as well the option to add another battery. It is also far less noisy than the mecer setup. I have a single battery 600w mecer option, and it is just so noisy.

Edit - there are similar options available at geewiz

I would specify emergency lighting (led tube) automated with integrated battery.
1/10 the cost, no training required, and skip any re-wiring (with exception of plug point lighting, then battery bulbs are apparently available)

Also install a few of these rechargeable bulbs in rooms that are used a lot, bed side lamp, toilet, bathroom, living room etc. They need to charge when used, works from the light switch even if power is off.

A lot of truth in this. Sometimes it is better to spend more and get a system that requires minimal intervention or understanding once installed or set up.

Even simple systems can be daunting for older folks if it needs some management or consist of several components.

Keep it as simple as possible. (We forget you know)…

How does these work? Do they switch on/off with the wall switch either with/without eskom power or do they come on permanently when eskom is out?

Read the reviews on that link?
    Political Correctness
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional illogical minority, rabidly promoted by a unscrupulous mainstream media which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd ... by the clean end!

Saw this in a pub - no idea why the wife does not see it so:
I'm not opinionated ... I'm just always right!

I have to come back to your original post. If it is only lights you are after, one of the cheapest solutions may be getting two or three of the below units.

    https://www.hificorp.co.za/tevo-magn...SABEgLfx_D_BwE

Change the batteries once a year if need be and Bob’s your uncle.

They can be left on charge and set to automatically turn on when power goes down.

If you want to start powering other appliances then the thinking needs to go a little further.

We have installed a few of these throughout the house. They need to be switched on to charge (4-5 hour charges gives about 2 hours light when power is down. What we're experiencing with stage 4-6 LS is that there is not enough time for the bulbs to charge fully before the next outage.

We also recently installed a Mecer 1440W inverter from Geewiz. This runs our wifi, a floor lamp, tv, soundbar and Mi box and has been brilliant! Best R9000 we have spent to combat LS.

Exactly how I have been using mine for many years.

Add a few rechargeable torches/lanterns (for the trip to the kitchen/bathroom) and Bob's you Uncle.

Thanks everyone. Great to have a forum like this.

Looking at prices, the Mecer 2.4 at that price still seems to be a good option.

    Thanks. Really a good option.

At this stage only lighting, but would like to add the TV later.

My parents are already turning 85 this year. Apart from lighting I want to try and give them some "normality" and if you want to, quality of life.
