    Default Chewing gum

    I need to vent...

Got this colleague who chews gum. Every day. I can hear popping and snapping sounds the whole time, don't know how she does it. It drives me up the wall and through the roof!!

Yes, I am sensitive to loud chewing noises but this is a whole new level. It makes me furious, angry, not myself.

Is it unreasonable to ask her to stop chewing gum?

Eat a lot of beans, boiled eggs and broccoli for dinners, then the next day fart loudly in the office.

    She will soon start complaining.

Then offer a truce; if she stops chewing gum (if you want, add chewing loudly), you will stop farting.

As my brother says, what's the difference between a cow that's busy re-chewing and a person that's chewing gum?

Aside of health benefit, people tend to chew gum due to (mental) stress, or being on a diet, or trying to stop smoking, or any other personal behaviours that leads to something else (ie, prevent nail biting, etc).

It's not unreasonable to ask her to stop but try to understand why she's doing it. There might be a personal reason that one don't know. Rather have a good relationship with a colleague than an unhealthy one.

If it was me, I would take her aside, and tactfully ask her why she's doing it. And then maybe tell her to be less noisy about this?

Be glad chewing gum is easy to solve. Other odd idiocrazies are a bit more unnerving in a work environment.

He is not complaining about the chewing per sé, he is complaining about the sound effects (like a horse eating dried mealies) that accompanies the chewing....

I already got that from his post. People do chew softly or loudly, and can do something about that. We need to bring awareness to them if it bothers oneselves.

I am deaf, so chewing gum does not bother me that much. But sometimes, on a quiet office day, when my ears are sensitive, and my hearing-aids pick it up, it does drive me up the walls. Especially at work, when everyone is so focussed into their software develop coding or graphic/UX designs or such, that the office is so dead-quiet, like a catacomb, where a mere crinkle of paper or drop of pencil will surprise-shock one almost into a comatose state, then chewing sounds tops it all off.

    Also, I lipread.
And there is nothing worse that trying to lipread a person talking/chewing at the same time (like a flippen cow) and occassionally seeing the piece of gum in the back of mouth.

Some behaviour simply is not becoming of a person, or not acceptable in office.

Then I talk to them. Tactfully first. End of problem. 9 times out of 10.
Other times not. When that hapens, I ask him/her whether they are a "carbon-based biped or evolving into a quattuor idiot" and let them figure it out....

Talking to the person is the most easiest to resolve this.

How about loudly giving her the answer to an embarrassing question (without her saying anything).....

Then profusely apologize and explain that you lipread...
