Supply and demand.

See what happens when you don't have competition?
Then you double your airfares overnight. Well done safair.

Supply and demand.
jip. opening up the gap for another transporter. If they kept the price fairly low, it would not encourage other operators

Yes but It is a supply and demand situation. They can't fulfill the demand. So there is in any case a space for another operator as well as they can build up their cash reserves for the fight coming with the new operator.
The prices are ridiculous now. I often flew to PE and back this year for less than R 3 k last week it was R 9000 return. That's not double but triple.
We were two that was needed for a site inspection and rather drove through the night. Even at the high petrol prices we were up and down for less than R 5 000.
We were just much more tired than with flying.
It's only crazy until you do it.
Almal dink jy is mal totdat jy die onmoontlike regkry!
Same happened to us.
At the end of May my wife and I flew to Cape Town ±R2 200.00.
Last week we flew back - ±R4 400.00.
If you need music in the bush or on the beach, you’re missing the point.
That bullet train idea is looking pretty good right now.

At least Safair/Cemair/SAA/Airlink are now on the Discovery Travel rewards program. That means a R3000 discount on a R8500 return flight for 2 people Cape Town to Durban & back.
If only I knew that before I booked and paid before Discovery announced it.![]()

True Prices increased tremendously. BUT consider the effect of school holidays and long weekends. We experience between George and Kempton Park seasonal increases over many years. Noticed just now R730 single one way towards mid July beginning of August. For a couple it is still cheaper to fly if you have a car available at your destination, if your dates are flexible and if you can travel lite - 7kg per person.

Currently to take the family of 4 to JHB = R26000 min without taxes and car rental and Parking/Uber.
Diesel 2800km @10km/l & R27/l = R7560.00
Obviously excludes tires & depreciation, so for R20k will be sitting in a car for 28 hours.
The safety aspect is probably the worst bit.
We fly regularly in the company. Last week I flew to CT and Safair demanded R5000 for the ticket which I thought was price gouging.
BUT, what really got me, was the fact that they wanted me to pay an additional R15 for a small bottle of water that cost R6 at P&P.
Out of principle I refused and on the way back I brought my own water
What an unpleasant experience.
No sir, this is plain robbery..
Find the solutions, not the problems.
Supply & demand in a free market at work gents. Nothing else.

Jip, if you support free market capitalism then these things are to be expected.
I read yesterday they will add 5 planes to their fleet and will add more routes as well now that Comair is gone.
I'm sure the temptation to add 20 more planes, 50 more pilots etc. must be huge since the demand is there, but it's also super risky considering the last 2 years we had.
I think in a way these guys want more competition to pick up the slack, rather than having to take the risks themselves.
Before you judge a person, first walk a mile in their shoes.
haha we can't drive or fly to our holiday destinations ... anyone for a walk?
A year ago it cost R30k in fuel jnb-cpt. Now over R100k.
