Does anybody know if ET has taken over SAA's slot or what is going on here?
ET also fly directly and daily from CPT to Addis, so no need to use other airline.

The new airport in Addis is now complete, so way more shops and places to eat and rest.
Most destinations is around a 6 hours flight, so not too long, but depending on where you going.
If you going to EU destinations, just make 100% sure about direct flights.
On certain days you get direct flights and on other days you get the "milk" train that lands at every other airport.

We have flown with them in December 2021 and June/July 2022 in economy. Similar to most other economy flights. Revamping the airport. From December to July there were big improvements in the airport, but still not finished. In December they offered us a hotel because our lay over was more than in 8 hours. In July this was changed to 12 hours.

Expect a Boeing 737 (-700 probably) registered in ET and it is operating for A Sky airlines (flyasky.com) who are based in Lome, Togo.
After LBV it continues to Lome.
Most likely flight deck will be ET crew, not sure about cabin crew? Depends whether it is wet lease or "damp" lease!

My specific question relates to Libreville which is the opposite side of Africa to Addis and which includes a longish transit and an additional flight.

It turns out that my flight is a code share flight with Asky as the operator...we'll see how that works out.

Two other African airlines which seems to price well: Rwanda Air and then a bit more expensive, Kenya Air
Any experience re these two, especially Rwanda Air?

I flew with Kenya Air to Dubai in 2017, no issues. Was much cheaper than other airlines by about half the price.

I've never flown with Rwanda Air, so cannot comment.

Kenya, yes a good couple of times. I personally never had any issues, apart from being stuck at Jomo Kenyatta for 13 hours once, on my way to Djibouti, because of their "interesting flight arrangements". That being said, I've had numerous mates loose luggage for a week or two when flying with them.

Personally, these days, I try and avoid the African carriers, as far I can. I rather pay more.

I have done a few flights on ET Air and can recommend them.

Rwandair not so much - definitely not worth the couple bucks you save. Long layovers in a crappy airport and stops along the way.
    Stick to ET IMHO.

I booked my BIL to Paris with Kenya Airways for the RWC final, business class. He was happy with the service, in fact he was VERY happy. At a much lower costs of others at the time, but it was RWC. Everything was full. Ethiopian I have no personal experience with. But I will use Kenya any time.

Ethiopian! I wouldn't travel with them again even if it was the last flight out of a holocaust, I've been stuck in Addis more times than I care to remember because of missed connections by delayed takeoff.
Kenyan is good and only the odd small delay.
Ruwand air, I've only flown inter Africa but haven't had any major issues.
Out of the three I'd personally use Kenyan airways.

Ja, ek weet, maar ek sal van Kaapstad via Hong Kong Libreville toe vlieg om hulle te bypass, dankie.

Hulle vliegtuie is moeg en hard gery sonder baie grooming.

Ethiopian also fly out direct from Gaborone, so for us it saves a trip to SA.
Flew to Greece from Gabs to Addis, plane was a bit old and no infotainment...just the pop down screen.
Flight was only 4.5hours so not too bad for the price. 1.5Hr layover in Addis and arrived in Greece around 5.30am .
By the time we got out the airport and got the bus and into Athens it was around 8am so went straight to the hotel and checked the bags in... no problems
return flight was a breeze as well.
    Worth the money !!
