So they say ... sigh
Bly stil Oosthuizen........TJOEPstil...........
He he, shows you how peoples mileage will vary.
I'm driving a Lion V6 with 212k km's on the clock and will never ever touch anything with a VAG badge on ever again, that 2.3 5cylinder fell apart as I drove out the dealership, and the rest of the body followed shortly behind.
Maybe the Veedub fans must just chill a bit...
It is not as if the current Amarok was a runaway success here, more like a niche vehicle.
I am sure a company like VW would keep a very close eye on the development and manufacturing of these "twin" vehicles, before they put their badge on the grill.
The new Ranger is obviously going to be a level or even 3 above the rest. That is obviously why VW decided to join in on this development effort. I'm sure the 2 vehicles will have a different character to them for the sake of die-hard fans...
Don't compare it to the Navara/X-class fiasco - it wasn't a ground-breaking design to start off with, and the prices Merc wanted for these was absolutely ridiculous!
That is probably why Nissan almost re-invented their Navara, not only to improve the mistakes of the previous model, but to get rid of the "bad taste" the Merc left...
...and lastly - if the VW V6 is such a "Gem", why is it that you can buy V6 Amarok's with more than a 100 000km on the clock for pretty much "cheap"?

A v6 Amarok for cheap? Where?
The VW is no doubt a gem of a motor. They have done service in other VW vehicles too. And I haven't seen many report of problems with the engine.
The Lion motor on the other hand.. Many reports on them.
The Amarok only had a limited number allocated to SA each year and they sold all that were allocated. They couldn't sell more as they didn't have more to sell.
The single cab didn't sell, I'll agree to that.
Merc didn't keep a close eye on the Nissan engines either. And they even put their own engine into it after a year or two. And it still was a flop. There is no VW in the new Amarok at all!
It will be as much different as the differences were between the Mazda BT50 and the Ranger. Which was almost zero! And it didn't turn out well for Mazda either.
I predict it is going it be a flop like the Merc and the BT50 were.
Maybe I will be proven wrong. I hope so but as things stand right now I cannot see any reason to buy the new "Amarok", at most likely a premium price over the Ranger. Just go and buy the Ranger then.

Have to Agree the Nissan/Renault/Merc thing was a mess. More for Merc pricing their model higher than the other for same same.
These are some interweb reasons for ford Ditching the powerstroke 3.0 last year already. Ford Lion Family
4 Common 3.0 PowerStroke Problems
A few common problems on the 3 liter Ford Power Stroke engine include:
- Crankshaft Bearings
- EGR
- DPF
- EGT Sensors
DPF are a ball ache, Egr's are problematic on many vehicles. Other 2 reasons might be more of an issue.

Like I said before aswell… I won’t be buying a Ford from VW…
They may as well have just stopped trying to sell the Amarok all together and call it day. IMHO.
These butcher jobs never turn out well. There are a number of these rebranded things available for sale but you will rarely see one of the knockoff versions. The originals seem to do well on the other hand…

South africa Market of Amaroks is irrelevant to VWAG.
I think south America sells more Amaroks in a day than Africa does in a year.
There the ranger and Amarok does not go head to head.
Its a global decision that we will measure on global scale.
Does anybody have global amarok sales for any month id like to compare pre covid Amarok with 2023 sales.
Then we can see did VW mess up.
I agree in South Africa it wont work.

We will have to see, time will tell. The Merc and Navara venture was also a global decision that backfired spectacularly! Globally. No just in SA.
VW and Merc are big brands established over many years. Their loyal customers don't want another brand with just a badge on.
Volkswagen tried it before with the Hilux and it didn't work. Now they are doing it again!
If they shared platforms but kept their own engines and drive trains it could have worked. But the plan for this one.. Nah it will backfire too I reckon.
